Of all the 'why the hell does this never feature in all-time fave Dylan songs lists' the omission of 'It Takes A Lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry' has me scratching my head more than most. Perhaps it's because it's one of the first Dylan songs I truly fell in love with. A perfectly paced gem. |

Of those dense, epic, biblical scale political songs Dylan knocked out in the early years - Masters of War, With God on Our Side, Gates of Eden - I always preferred Chimes of Freedom to the latter, which sounds too dense for its own good, to my ears. Chimes of Freedom, by contrast, is more nuanced, never allowing its structure to overwhelm the sentiments it honours. |

Dylan has said it's the one song he'd 'take back'. Why? Because - as I thought was widely known - it's an explicit attack on not only Suze Rotolo, but her sister too. |
