| Paul Dempsey – Bird in a Basement Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
A call out for help, asking for some 'living thing' to energise the narrator. 'Hey living thing, buy me a drink, and drive me out to the airport. Give me 200 dollars and say the best thing anyone's ever said.' The 'best thing' is along the lines of 'get out of here; make something of your life'. It goes both ways also, with the narrator promising the other that he will wake them and 'ring all the bells'. This idea of helping lift another up out of the standard life is upheld by the verse about a dog on a fire escape, a bird in a basement. This is, symbolically, what each of the characters in this song are like in their lives. I think this one is a very powerful, positive reflection on what 'good love' is. |

| John Mayer – Belief Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Is there anyone who Ever remembers Changing their mind from the paint on a sign? Is there anyone who Really recalls Ever breaking rank at all, for something someone yelled real loud one time? ^ We all have our different beliefs, and none of us change our mind simply from 'the paint on a sign' or someone yelling 'real loud' at us. We are all, to a degree, dogmatic. Oh everyone believes In how they think it oughta be Oh everyone believes And theyre not going easy... ^ Even though we may not have great reasons for believing what we do, we're 'not going easily' - we won't back down about them. Belief is a beautiful armor But makes for the heaviest sword Like punching underwater You never can hit who you're trying for Some need the exhibition Some have to know they're trying Its the chemical weapon for the war thats raging on inside ^ Belief is the armor that helps us understand our lives. But it 'makes for' the heaviest sword - that is, in the armor that is our belief, we search out the opposite view (the heaviest sword) to test our armor against it. But it makes no difference - 'you never can hit who you're trying for'. The best you can do is reinforce your message to people who already believe what you do. Some need the exhibition or to know they're trying in life, through their beliefs. It's the chemical weapon that helps settle the war of nerves and self-doubt inside everyone. Oh everyone believes From emptiness to everything Oh everyone believes And no ones going quietly... ^ as above Were never gonna win the war, Were never gonna stop the war Were never gonna beat this, if belief is what were fighting for Were never gonna win the war Were never gonna stop the war Were never gonna beat this, if belief is what were fighting for ^ Reinforcing the message that belief cannot be forced upon anyone - as a race human beings are never going to progress if we don't accept this. Is there anyone Who can remember, Ever surrendered With their life on the line? ^ Dogmatism again Were never gonna win the war, Were never gonna stop the war Were never gonna beat this, if belief is what were fighting for Were never gonna win the war Were never gonna stop the war Were never gonna beat this, if belief is what were fighting for ^ as above What puts one-hundred thousand children in the sand? Belief can...Belief can What puts a folded flag inside his mothers hand? Belief can...Belief can ^ describing the effects of dangerous ideas - showing why we need to be concerned about people espousing their beliefs. An incredibly mature song, dealing with a huge issue. |

| Spoon – Don't Make Me A Target Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I agree that this is about Bush, but I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this interpretation of the song's title yet: don't make me a target is a reference to Bush's international aggression fostering hatred of Americans and increasing the culture divide. This in turn creates a higher likelihood of terrorism and war affecting the American people. So Britt is protesting against these actions when he says "Don't make me a target" | |
| Elliott Smith – Memory Lane Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A stunningly pure song about what happens to a person who doesn't quite fit in to society. Amazing | |
| Fionn Regan – The Underwood Typewriter Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Agreed. No matter what mood I am in, even if I am completely stressed out, hearing the beginning of this song just calms me - it's transcendent | |

| Bon Iver – Lump Sum Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
It always sounded to me like: 'every inner inch/of lump sum'. I really can't hear inertia in there at all |
