To me I get the scene of someone writing a letter home from combat to someone they love. I've been there and this song was dear to me. "I wish I were with you, I couldn't stay Every direction leads me away" It means I would love nothing more to be with you, but so much has changed in the time I've been over here, I wouldn't be able to stay with you while my brothers die overseas. He's torn inside between his love of his comrades and his family. "Pray for tomorrow, but for today All I want is to be home" He's praying to stay alive and just wants to be home with his brothers. "Echoes and silence, patience and grace All of these moments I'll never replace" His reflection over the flag draped coffins is something he'll never forget. "Fear of my heart, absence of faith All I want is to be home" He is scared and as he sees men maimed and killed all around him and sees the people he's killed and maimed, he begins to lose faith in god, and wants to be home away from all of it. "People I've loved, I have no regrets Some I remember, some I forget Some of them living, some of them dead All I want is to be home" He is saying is last words here that anyone outside his unit will hear. |
