Brandon Flowers is mormon, and this song is obviously about Joseph Smith... "are the rumors eating you alive," Joseph Smith was hated by a lot of people, and there were a lot of rumors about him... "from the temple walls to the new york night," they built a lot of temples when he was alive, and he was born and lived most of his life in New York... "And the desert It's a hell of a place to find heaven Forty years lost in the wilderness looking for God" (i know it sounds a lot like Moses but listen to this) Salt Lake City was the desert and that was supposed to be Zion, it also took them 40 years to build the Salt Lake City temple... it also says about a carpenter, so that's obviously Joseph from the old testiment... i think he's kind of talking about both |

I think this song is about trying to get right with god... Brandon Flowers grew up Mormon, and in every Mormon picture of Jesus he is wearing a red robe (man in red) which explains why he says... "you always hold your head up high, cause it's a long way down... i just wanna show you what i know and catch you when the current lets you go" In the chorus i think he is wondering whether it is worth the effort, he says how he never got along good with others and how he' trying to do good but temptation feels so good (I think the river symbolizes the evils of the world) The little story about Adam is pretty self-explanitory, and the very end when he says "...but there's something pulling me" It sounds like he's saying that he wants to but he's just not ready to take that leap and change for the better. |
