as an enormous fan of bruce it is no small thing to say that not only is this my favorite bruce song, but my favorite song ever. that said, i have to say that until today i never thought that anyone really commits suicide in the song. The "chelsea suicide" line i always interpreted as some kind of social suicide, possibly after getting hysterical to the point of tears and laughter-i mean in the lines right before he says how strong she is-locomotives, to me, certainly evoke images of strength. the verse prior i thought was symbolism-dont forget he wants her to crawl into HIS ambulance-who just has one of those handy? also, why would someone try to make a dying lover reveal anything when strenght is ebbing so? they are waiting with O2 masks at the hospital-but apparently he has some in his bus but wont give her any unles she asks-that seems a little too sadistic for bruce (but maybe not glen danzig...) also, why would a hospital be waiting for someone with O2 masks when her surgeon believes it to be too late? and how does her surgeon even know her condition? i believe that the "its not your lungs this time its your heart that holds your fate" line means that it is not her physical body but soul (Vonnegut anybody?) that is ill. whew. i am not trying to argue with anyone but just stating what the song has always meant to me. i may be dead wrong-either way "For You" is one of the most beautifully written and performed songs. he really bares his heart to us with that piece-in fact i believe that the "cloudline urges me...electric surges free" line refers to her unfavorible stance inspiring him to write such a piece-as a writer myself, i often feel that strong inspiration can feel like the air is alive with current. crack and sizzle, baby- i smell ozone!!! |

i have heard moe. say that the song is about NO2, but with the exception of the word "huff" i dont get it-perhaps this is the most allegorical song ever! |

i agree that this is a great tune-especially the version from 8/8/08 at the highline-however: i hear the rob verse differently-perhaps he (like steven tyler) changes it up from show to show What i hear: green water give you clean cool buzz cocaine money-sell all your blood down damn what you doin' to yourself you do to your friends everybody else will know how it ends with a boom but as we all know translating rob can be an inexact science |
