Just another interpretation that nobody seemed to touch on (pun intended..) Deacon is writing about an addiction to self-lovin, aka masturbation. He wants to break free from the addiction; that masturbation is purely "self-satisfying"; "living without you by my side" aka his hand; he has actually fallen in love for the first time with someone else, and he's now trying to break free from the "love" he expresses with himself - because at this point of his life, it's only holding him back from living his own life free from the addiction; "God knows, got to make it on my own".
