I agree with LaFlamaBlanca. I think this is about meeting someone. To me, the first verse sets the visual of someone alone and lonely-by themselves taking it in. The second verse is meeting someone on no particualr special day-you're just walking along minding your own business, same lonely life as usual then BAM-"soulmate". Third verse is them spending their lives together. Waking in the morning next to them, etc. Fourth verse may be an elaboration of the third or they possibly lost that person, maybe through death but they are always there with them-they "Echoes" of them are still very much present, hence the title. which brings back to the beginning-maybe the first verse is the loneliness and memory (once again the "Echoes") brought on by the following 3 verses. |

OMG IT'S NOT ABOUT SUICIDE!!!! Why is every song done in the 90's about suicide, drugs, or Kurt fucking Cobain?? Believe it or not, musicians had other things going on in their heads.
With that said, it is about abuse. And to those who have not noticed-my favorite part is listening to the intensity of the song, feeling Eddie's aggrivation yet release of a shitty situation and as the song ends, right after that last chord, you hear the drumsticks hit the wall..lol. The producer having kept poor Dave Abbruzzese do take after take after take and at the end of that particular one he throws his sticks which hit a wall..lol. It's the perfect end to a song so intense with frustration and release. So symbolic. God, I love Pearl Jam. I love that intensity. Every time I hear it I get chills. That one small *clank clank* sound adds so much, especially if you know the story. |

Wake Up. It's a song on the album with the same type of beauty and introspection as River of Deceit. If you like this one, chances are you'll dig that one too. |

Exactly. Thank you. But, of course, when the media (and yourself in a way-esepcially if it was the key to your demise) has defined you by your drug addiction more than your talents - everything you do and your very existance has become "typecast" so to speak. It sucks. You could cure fucking cancer, but it everyone's head, you are a junkie and everything you say or do is inspired by the drug. It's sucks. Poor guy. |

God. I love the guitar work. It's simple, yet absolutlely beautiful and soulful. This is the epitome of the perfect song to me. Everything about it from the compostion of the instruments-the quiet of the drums, the smooth guitars and flowing bass to Layne's amazing voice. This song-whether it's what it means or not-is what an opiate addiction "sounds" like. If you could put music to the way it feels to be hooked on such a thing, the physical pain, the withdraws, the weakness and sickness and realizing that you have to stop but feel so fucking powerless and scared to- it would be this. That feeling of finally realizing that you can take back control over some piece of shit object that has ruled over you for so long-that you HAVE to in order to keep living. It's a freedom that, unless you've been there, you cant imagine what it's like. I dont know why. I fell in love with these guys and this song during a really low, shameful, horrible yet self discovering time in my life and it became the soundtrack for what was going on at the time which, ironically, Layne had been through-but to a higher degree. |
