| Cage the Elephant – Aberdeen Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Soooo many people on this site make every song about drug use... just because you are a drug user doesn't mean that all music is about drugs. Sure it CAN be interpreted to be about drugs by you, the listener, but it could equally be about a series of short relationships, a long-term relationship, any number of other places called Aberdeen or even the highs and lows of life in general. None of these is explicitly supported or excluded in the lyrics but are all possible interpretations (along with many others I'm sure). For me it evokes euphoric emotions of the soaring highs of life while alluding to the darkness and chaos of the lows. I'm not too bothered about the exact context of the lyrics, that is just how it makes me feel. |

| Gnar Kill – Skeletor Vs Beast Man Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I disagree with the earlier comments to the effect that this song has no meaning or purpose. In fact its purpose is very clear: To explore what might happen if the characters Skeletor and Beastman, from the Masters of the Universe cartoon series, were to engage in a homosexual relationship. Of course this is done for the sake of humour but also just out of sheer caprice. Furthermore, given that the title on the album is in fact "Skeletor/beastman!", it is highly likely the song was created to parody the many examples of slash fiction that exist on the internet and use similar structure in their titles in order to describe the relationships therein. |

I think Phil must modify this story to suit... as I saw them play it live many years ago and he told a slightly different version of the story: Basically he was hitch-hiking out of town one day and this guy in a van picks him up. They start driving and go past a cat squashed on the road (1), then a little down the road the guy remembers that he left his weed at home... so they drive back to town passing the cat on the way (2). After getting back to the town Phil and the driver smoke some weed and then get back on the road, passing the cat for a third time on the way out (3). Hence dead cat three times. |

| Darwin Deez – Constellation Lyrics | 14 years ago |

This song seems to be a reflection on solipsism. That is the notion that only one's own mind is sure to exist. This is evident in several lines: "Are their patterns in the skies? / Are the patterns only in our eyes?" - Questioning the reality of what he sees and his tendency to look for meaning in the stars. "Or is a constellation just a constellation? / Is a constellation just a consolation?" - Again questioning if the stars are real or if they are just an illusion to console his mind. "Just like twinkling stars, we seem connected / But i know that a constellation is just a constellation / A constellation is just a consolation" - Reflecting on the perception of being connected to other humans and reflecting that this too may just be an illusion of the mind. All in all a pretty deep song given how simple it sounds on first listening! |

| TV on the Radio – Will Do Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I like your interpretation Shmegan though I would read it as a man who is infatuated with another who has just recently come out of a long-term relationship and isn't ready to get into anything serious - or at least is using that excuse to the suitor. The reason for this is the first few lines of the song: "It might be impractical to seek out a new romance / We won't know the actual if we never take a chance". These would seem to be his attempt to convince the recipient of his attention to take an interest in him despite their reservations. As the song progresses it becomes increasingly clear that the singer is infatuated with the other person: "Anytime will do, my love" even though he has no real relationship. This is evident in various other lines in the song. By the third verse the destructive power of this obsession is revealed in the description of the beloved: "Oh my reddest rose, caldera, set it off / How your fire grows hermosa caldera glistening". The use of the metaphor of hermosa (which I understand is Spanish for beautiful) caldera (the blast crater of a volcano) is particularly illustrative of this destructive power. Despite this insight the song concludes with the repetition of "Anytime will do / My love / Anytime will do / No choice of words will break me from this rule". Showing that his obsession continues unabated. Interestingly, that the singer never makes any reference to the gender of the lover aside from the use of the feminine form of hermosa/hermoso (I don't speak Spanish so I'm not sure how significant this is in terms of the gender of the subject of the song). That is my reading of it at least, make of it what you will. :) |

| Santigold – L.E.S. Artistes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Yah I have to agree with most of what you have said. For me this song is about transcendence, in this case above the wealth and fame that goes with being an artist for most in search of more lofty ideals. From the chorus it would seem that Santi might have only become a musician for this very reason and may even regret becoming a famous artist (as she is giving up her previous anonymity, at to some extent the freedom that goes with it) but hopes it was worth it to stand up for what she believes. "I can say I hope it will be worth what I give up If I could stand up mean for all the things that I believe" |

It is about picking strawberries... wild strawberries to be exact. Clearly. Ok so there are sexual and drug undertones here... |

| Faithless – Salva Mea Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Have to agree with you there anon. The title is "Save me" in Latin and all the lyrics focus on inner turmoil and despair which the character is unable to express. This forms an interesting contrast with the music which is very uplifting, perhaps serving overall to help improve the listeners frame of mind when dealing with inner turmoil. I can certainly attest that this song has picked me up at times when I have been down. | |
