Styx – Show Me The Way Lyrics 11 years ago
He's asking for something to believe in, plain and simple. Looking for someone to baptize him (to take him to the river) and lead him (wash his illusions away- tell him/ teach him the right)... The world seems full of evil, everybody he believed in is weak or corrupt- he can't believe in them anymore. Strangely reminiscent of "Where have all the cowboys gone?" : men are men, just animals with big brains, not saints.

Head full of Zombie: I think we got ourselves a double meaning. Maybe he's high on weed,_and_ he's in Louisiana, so he's got Zombies on the brain too. He meets a witchy woman and, she makes him breakfast...

Anyway, to me that's the charm of the song, the scary miss witch doctor says come in, have some breakfast.

Annie Lennox – Don't Let It Bring You Down Lyrics 13 years ago
This is a song about how to live in a terrifying, dangerous spectacle of a universe.

All the good things are falling apart. "It's only castles burning, don't let it get you down." Ironic, because the wonderful castle is falling, shouldn't it get you down? But then, isn't there always some wonderful thing falling to pieces? So, which is the message, you ask? I guess that's up to us.

The blind guy, he's not addicted, he's just human. He's blind or addicted or just hoodwinked by society, feeling around in seeming darkness because he can't percieve the light. Broad metaphor for everybody. He figures something out, and gets excited, and gets himself killed. Cruel, capricious happenstance, another thing getting destroyed.

What ray of hope does she offer here? "Find someone who's turning." Well, if life has it's ups and downs, there must be somebody starting an upswing... Grab on to one of them. "You'll come around." - You can turn it around too.

This is a song about how to live in a terrifying, dangerous spectacle of a universe.

Gin Blossoms – Follow You Down Lyrics 13 years ago
This song sounds like it's about a fling a man has with a woman who is as extremely adventurous as he is cautious. He's got this- life crisis thing going on, where he is sick of his entire life, style, and personality. So he latches on to her, to follow her on her adventures, but he's not comfortable with her Chaos anymore than he is with his caution.

And yes, there is Bungee Jumping in the story. I think it could be both literal and figurative: jumping is exciting, he says, and that's great, if we are just careful enough to "tie the knots" correctly. So he's thinking, maybe he needs a more seasoned adventure-guide... But hey, you only live once.

Bee Gees – Holiday Lyrics 13 years ago
Ooh you're a holiday , such a holiday
Ooh you're a holiday , such a holiday

It's something I thinks worthwhile
If the puppet makes you smile

Hey, toy with me all you want if you get your kicks,

If not then you're throwing stones
Throwing stones, throwing stones

And people in glass houses shouldn't...

Ooh it's a funny game
Don't believe that it's all the same

You think it's funny
But It makes a difference to me

Can't think what I've just said
Put the soft pillow on my head

I've made a total fool of myself and am burying my head under my pillow

Millions of eyes can see
Yet why am I so blind
When the someone else is me
It's unkind, it's unkind

I can't believe that I've fallen for this
Like the people I've been laughing at

de de de de de de de de de de de de de
de de de de de de de de de de de de de

Yet millions of eyes can see
Yet why am I so blind
When the someone else is me
It's unkind, it's unkind

Ooh you're a holiday , ev'ry day , such a holiday

Oh, you're a real piece of work, you are! Just a fun time you give me

Now it's my turn to say , and I say you're a holiday

You'll listen to me. I say, you're a pain in the neck! (Irony!)

It's something I thinks worthwhile
If the puppet makes you smile
If now then you're throwing stones
Throwing stones , throwing stones

Hey, good work making a fool of me
Hope you enjoyed it
What goes around comes around
You'll break your pretty glass house you will

Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah, a term of endearment, much more specific than "Hey beautiful." I also think it's a sort of counterpoint to the darkness symbolism: hey, turn around, shine your eyes on me. I.E. You're my sun, turn around and look at me and the light will be back.

Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
Sad? This is the most optimistic "sad" song I've ever heard. First of all, it's a duet, man and woman, yes? His voice is there anyhow, calling her. Second, it's not a nova, it's an eclipse- and who can't weather a frigging eclipse?

Phrases that really make the difference: Now and then ... then I see the look in your eye ... we can make it to the end of the line ... forever's gonna start tonight...

It's for listening to when you're about to give up and there's no relief in sight but, nobody's packing their bags... Because all you gotta do is:

Turn around, bright eyes.

Egad, man is everything drug addiction?

Heck, sure. But that's only because love/lust is the real deal that the synthetic moods are trying to portray...

There's the slag you were hoping for, hope it lived up to the hype! ;-)

Besides if a love song doesn't have a drug reference you can turn it into a religious song... Maybe even then...

Martika – Toy Soldiers Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah, huh.
I guess if the artist says it was about friend who dies of cocaine addiction, that pretty much solves it, right? But as a writer I think that songs are about what the words say, not what the writer thinks.

So that said, hmm. It is definitely about things going out of control, not just one person but a whole group. Everybody is busy doing their thing, nobody has the presence of mind to get out of lockstep even though that's all that seems to be necessary to avoid disaster: just stop it. Addiction and temptation, both could refer literally to drugs or to anything desired but treacherous: Love, lust, sex, drugs.

The thing that is ambiguous is "Heart to heart." That makes it sound like a love song. A love song to drugs? Ah, yes.

Well, as far as this comment goes? Never mind...

Songs never tell a whole Narrative, just barely a vignette. Usually it's just a moment; this "moment" just needed setup to be fully powerful.

I think the "I left her by the river" and "went out walking alone" can be easily reconciled as both true: They were at the river, he left her there (safe and sound) and she went walking off deeper. Possibly to escape? Possibly to commit suicide?

Well I've never seen the video and don't want to, the song is too complete and rich for me. I'll bet it would clear up a few things if you assumed that it was part of the same work!

Yeah, Maybe Mary died but I think she just disappeared. Makes it more poignant, his life being destroyed because she And he wants to disappear. Or die. Whatever Mary did...

I don't think this is about racism, really. But that's because I lived in a little microtown that well, once the town knew what you were, it seemed you had no choice but to be that, forever. Because there was nobody who didn't know...

Something has to make you run...

I swear, this is one of those songs that hit a nerve, like I was really there. What have I done? Why didn't I go? I want to go! What am I doing here? Oh, what have I done!

Seriously, she really tells the story...

She's speaking from the night before. "I know what's going on, I know we may feel differently in the morning, but I'm happy here and I want to take that risk. I promise to let you go gracefully, if that's what you want, but maybe the day will be just like the night and it's going to be OK."

Linda Ronstadt – Long Long Time Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is full of grace and power. She stood up in the face of indifferent fate, to ask for everything she yearned for, and he brushed her off. Yeah, it's sad, and she (the character) is sad. But the heart wants what it wants, and that's all there is. And people who have the grace and courage to admit that they want something that seems denied, are the ones who ultimately get what they want.

(Might not be him, but how many people can withstand that kind of onslaught? With her attitude, she'd have me married for like, twenty years before I wondered if it was MY hearts desire or only HERS. ;-) )

Pink – Please Don't Leave Me Lyrics 14 years ago
Her persona- her "voice" here is the bad one, the mean one. The one yelling, accusing, being rude and throwing him out. I love you I need you, yes I really feel that it's all true but I can't stop hurting you either. So, please don't leave me, please enable me, please let me continue. Don't make me say I love you, don't make me be nice or take good care of you.

This isn't really sarcasm or naivete, but a naive and destructive character being portrayed spot on in all his horrible humanity by a brilliant artist. You can relate to the poor, confused abuser, or you can shiver in horror when you realize what he's doing, that the same sentiments could come from somebody who "just got carried away" or from the psycho in the video.

Oh and "What is it about you" her character is BLAMING THE VICTIM. P!nk is an absolute genius here, a Shakespeare of our day.

@ Kevwiz: When I have a reaction like Franklin Webber's, it usually means that I am strongly tempted to do as the singer is saying. The lyric that really bothered me was in another song, "I don't understand, if I'm not the one then why does my heart tell me I am?" OOH, he sounded so WHINY! But truth is that's exactly how I felt, and when I admitted it I didn't have to be so self-righteous about it. (And yeah, really wasn't the one...)

Juice Newton – Queen of Hearts Lyrics 14 years ago
"The Queen of Hearts" is the one, the one you really want. The Joker is the next floozy. He's playing hard to get and she's about to (try) to get away. He never cuts her any slack, never gives her a moment to think "Maybe" he's going to keep her heart from breaking. Not even in bed! And she doesn't have to catch him cheating, he sends people to tell her what he's doing. And he gets upset, but really, he's the one doing it.

The woman is either a stalker or the best thing that could happen to him! But either way he's the one pulling the strings, it looks like.

Midnight
And I'm a-waitin'
On the twelve-o-five
Hopin' it'll take me
Just a little farther down the line

It's the middle of the night, she's on the run, trying to get to "safety" but probably metaphorically

Moonlight
You're just a heartache in disguise
Won't you keep my heart from breakin'
If it's only for a very short time

Moonlight is his sweet, romantic side. She's like, "Give me something to believe in, even if it's a lie."

>Playing with the Queen of Hearts
>Knowin' it ain't really smart

Kinda dumb to "Play" with the queen of your heart

>The Joker ain't the only fool
>Who'll do anything for you

Why mess with another player when
You've got me hook, line and sinker?

Laying out another lie

"I'm trying to make up a story that will make all this work, maybe lying to myself"

Thinkin' 'bout a life of crime
'Cos that's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you

I am getting desperate to fix this, even if it means getting away from you

Honey, you know it makes you mad
Why is everybody tellin' everybody
What you have done

I'm not spying, you're just not keeping your secrets

Baby, I know it makes you sad
But when they're handin' out the heartaches
You know you got to have you some

It's not me you're trying to hurt, you're sabotaging the best thing you've got going

(See above for chorus)

Lovers, I know you've had a few
But hide your heart beneath the covers
And tell 'em they're the only one

I know I'm not the first, but I'd like to think I'm the one that matters now!

And others, they know just
What I'm going through
And it's a-hard to be a lover
When you say you're only in it for fun

I know you care, don't keep trying to hurt me, don't make it hard to pretend!

Anna Nalick – Breathe (2 A.M.) Lyrics 14 years ago
2 Am and she calls me cause I'm still awake
Can you help me unravel my latest mistake
I don't love him, winter just wasn't my season.

She got pregnant with the wrong guy, can you help her fix this?

Yeah we walk through the doors so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize
Hypocrites you're all here for the very same reason.

The woman needed help going to the clinic. All the other women are looking at them, their own inability to forgive this action written all over their face.

Cause you can't jump the track
We're like cars on a cable and life's like an hourglass glued to the table,
No one can find the rewind button girl
So just cradle your head in your hands.
And breathe, just breathe, whoa breathe just breathe

Can't go back, can't erase your mistakes. So don't freak, don't panic, if that's all you can do then, just breathe.

May he turned 21 on the base of Fort Bliss
Just today he sat down to the flask in his fist
Ain't been sober since maybe October of last year

Kid joined the military while still a baby and all he can do about it is get drunk, and just now he's looking at what he's doing.

Here in town you can tell he's been down for while
But my God it's so beautiful when the boy smiles
Wanna hold him but maybe I'll just sing about it

He's looking like a mile of bad road
When somebody that down smiles it's like the angels singing
Makes me want to hold him but ....

There's a light at each end of this tunnel you shout cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made
You'll just make them again if you'll only try turnin' around

You can try to go back. Whatever way you go, it's really just forward.

2Am and I'm still awake writing this song
If i get it all down on paper it's no longer inside of me threaten' the life it belongs to.

I can't sleep, this that I'm venting about, it's bigger than I am and I think it's going to destroy me if I try to 'hold it in'

And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary screamin' out aloud
And I know that you'll use them however you want to.

These are very private thoughts that I'm sharing, and I'm feeling very vulnerable, but it doesn't matter now because, I've said what I said and you're going to do or say whatever is inside of you to say or do.

And (the chorus) means, there's nothing I can do about what I've already done, so...

Sing it if you understand...yeah breath
Just breathe, ohho breathe

Let me know if you know what I'm singing about...

I only _thought_ this was a good song before I sat down and wrote this out. Now I know. This is why I want to be a writer.

Richard Marx – Hazard Lyrics 14 years ago
A boy with a creepy personality and a bad reputation became friends or more with a girl named Mary, who on the surface seemed to fit in a lot better than he did. But in reality she was drawn to him because she hated the place more than he did. They always talked about how, one day they'd escape. One night they met by the river, had a nice long walk. He went home, she ran away. Everybody thinks that the creepy little boy has grown up to be everything they feared; they want answers and there's this one all too easy answer: the crazy boy killed her because that's what crazy boys do. For his part the boy is panicking, thinking that these people have had enough, and they're really going to hang him this time. The local cop lectured him; he said, "I've protected you as much as I can... I can't rescue you again. It's all gone. You're going to have to face up to this."

This boy is a defeated, harried dreamer. His reaction, deep down, is to dream about running off to the river, to follow his one friend to safety.

On a side note: One day I was listening to this sad story, reliving the sadness of being in such a limited world, and the terror of having to answer to the coming inquisition. All of a sudden that name popped up: you see I had fallen in love with a woman named Mary. OMG, I almost had a panic attack. It's almost funny now...

Retarded??? There's nothing in the song to say "retarded," I guess that might cause it too. Anybody can get a bad reputation. IF you meet the people of your town at the very worst point in your life-- right after you father leaves you, like this kid had to deal with ? -- you're going to be abused by the other kids, you're going to react poorly, and you're going to be branded for life. Maybe not by EVERYBODY, but by the people who talk. Enough to make you feel like a freak. Enough to make you feel unwanted, even hated.

I laughed out loud when I read that line you said about "His being an outsider surely wouldn't be enough." Well then again maybe I have my own prejudices, about small white hick towns. There's only room in a town like that for two cliques: inside, outside.

"That boy's not right" means that he comes off as creepy to his neighbors. It means that somebody got a bad vibe from him one day when he was upset and they shared it with everybody. Thing is maybe he wasn't "right", maybe he was freaking out from the divorce or his father's death, but you have to understand, when everybody knows everybody-first, last, middle initial and pedigree, you may never get another chance.

And of course, an intense boy with poor social skills and a bad reputation-- much like I was-- may never give the townsfolk another chance either. He may assume that they hate him, and just feel so bad that, there really isn't any hope...

It reminds me of the story of the little Dutch boy who found a crack in the levee-- the dam holding back the ocean-- and put his finger in it. It's about trying to lend your own personal strength to something that needs a thousand times your personal power... It's about being senselessly "heroic", naively "idealistic", in trying to fix a problem the way it seems like you "should" do it rather than doing something that has a chance of working.

When I say, "I know it's not right," sure I'm talking about the relationship. There's moments I'm hoping I'll dump him or he'll dump me. Ya know, but there's something deeper. I got to let go of the problems, stop trying to make it right. Let it stand, or let it crumble, on it's own instead of trying to push it all back in to place.

C'mon, he's a pig, but I knew that when I moved in. Gotta move on, to stop being such a pig myself.
