| Drake – Best I Ever Had Lyrics | 16 years ago |

You could interpret this song in two ways, and interestingly the two are basically opposites. One is the obvious surface meaning: Drake is singing to one specific girl, she's the best he ever had, and he wants to be with her forever. It's romantic. I think this is the way most casual listeners, and women in particular, interpret the song. A closer listen reveals the song differently. Basically, Drake is singing about really dope sex, but not with any girl in particular. He wants every girl he sleeps with to think she's his number one, and that she's really the best he's ever had. It's still got a really sweet message, but it is quite ironic. This view begins with the intro: "You know a lot of girls be... thinkin' my songs are about them, but... this is not to get confused. This one's for you." He never names the woman; the song means all things to all listeners. Seen in this light, the meaning of a number of lyrics changes. "Never pay attention to them rumors and what they assume, and until them girls prove it I'm the one to never get confused with, cause..." is essentially an admission. In the hook Drake says, "And I say the same thing every single time..." You could read this as Drake telling one girl the same thing every time they have sex, but I think he means he says the same thing to ALL the women he sleeps with. He's kind of a sick genius, since it would make all these women feel special. The ambiguity is reiterated in the outro: "See, this the type of joint you got to dedicate to somebody. Just make sure they that special somebody. You know who you are... I got you." But he doesn't dedicate the song to anybody. Instead, he says, "you know who you are," in essence dedicating the song to any and every woman he's ever been with. Really a great song, made even better by the multiple levels on which you can appreciate it. |
