I think this song is about waking up after a tragedy and thinking it was just a terrible dream, then slowly realizing that it really happened. In my opinion it's a sequel to "Edward is Dedward." "The dream I had that you were in - Turned bad and then it finished, And I am glad to be awake." The narrator wakes up and thinks Edward's death/suicide was just a nightmare. "I have woken from a sleep. I am sure the world is different, That it's changed." She begins to realize it wasn't a dream and calls for Edward, hoping he'll show up and prove her wrong. "I heard a sound, Across the lawns, Was like a hoof being taken from a horse." The sound could be a gunshot. In "Edward is Dedward," we learn that Edward has threatened suicide before ("I never thought your threats would come good / You never did what you said you would"). I think he explained to the narrator that he wanted to die, but they'd see each other again in the afterlife: "I understand, what you explain, That there are things that you believe, And you think you will see me again." The narrator refuses to accept that and tries to save him from himself: "I'd stand beside you, The day you face the tide, I think I could make it turn around, Know I could make it go dry. Cause you and I - We are safe when we're together." But, ultimately, Edward chooses to die and the narrator is left repeating something she probably comforted herself with a thousand times: "We are safe when we're together." |
