| The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics

It's a song about a guy who lacks libido. And the feelings of self-worthlessness that follow a botched conquest. He would ideally love to fornicate with this pretty girl, but can't because he's shy/inexperienced/impotent/asexual/gay etc. etc. I don't think the reason matters. It's a universal humiliation most men can relate to. Feeling sexually inferior. And he could probably perform at some later date when the two have gotten comfortable with one another. But she wants it now. And she will not wait. And you know the rest. |

Funny, i always thought this was a song about a guy who's all talk. He promises the girl this highly spiritual out-of-body experience, and in the end he doesn't deliver. Hence the lines "that's all there is, nothing more that you can feel now, that's all there is". Doesn't sound like a great time was had. More like, "you kidding me? That's it?" The guy doesn't seem to mind though. He got what he wanted, and will most likely move on to the next conquest, seducing his target with the same smooth lines. I think the song's got a sarcastic undertone to it. |

i heard from someone that this song is about the covering up of the JFK assassination. I never would've thought of that, but i thought i'd check it out on the internet, and i can't find anything anywhere about this particular interpretation. It's not too far off if you look at the lyrics closely tho. The hanging is the assassination, the blind commisioner's the Warren Commision, Cassanova is JFK, Ophelia is Jackie O, Cinderella is Marilyn Monroe, the superhuman crew is the government....I know it's a little farfetched, but it's an interesting theory. |
