"I don't see myself when I look when I look at the flag Thank God for that" Considering the flag represents the most powerful democratic and free nation on the Earth, the fact that this singer doesn't see himself when he looks at the flag is disconcerting. The flag doesn't represent war; it represents hope, freedom, and humanity. The flag is what we as a people make it. We are all citizens of this country, and flag reflects us individually when we look at it. It seems the song writer has some self-imposed angst mixed with a misunderstanding of his nation. He feels disaffected by outside events, when the real damage exists inside of him. He could stand up to make the world a better place, instead he blindly blames his country. |
