It's "check" in US English, "cheque" in British English (pronunciation, though, is the same). Also, Dave himself says that this song is "...fast, loud, crazy song... about absolutely nothing": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJgjU0bTK9U So there, it just has no meaning whatsoever. |

First of all, I doubt that the meaning of the word "gay" is supposed to be what it is mostly used for today. With that being said, I really have no idea what was this song supposed to be about, and the "ss caps" certainly only add to the confusion... :-/ |

I don't know who wrotethe Wikipedia article about the song ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Disease_(song) ), but here it goes from there: The song takes a look at decline of the British manufacturing industry in the early 1980s, focusing on strikes, depression and dysfunctionality. For example, the absurdity of media-driven maladies is laid out in a segment of the song describing the narrator's visit to a doctor's office for treatment of his "Industrial Disease". The reference to "Brewer's Droop" as a medical condition is an in-joke, referring both to the effect of alcohol on libido and to the band of the same name that Mark Knopfler played in prior to Dire Straits. |

I agree with this view. I also didn't like the song *at all* until I heard the acoustic version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_SRFitvi9A&fmt=22 It's so awesome... |
