Have to agree somewhat with scummyman. Firstly, the singer isn't starting a sentence, he's commencing a stanza of a song that's written, to a certain extent, as stream-of-consciousness which is not subject to typical grammatical rules. |

| Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics

Personally I find myself looking past the surface layer of drunken-ness. This song isn't a happy one. Personally I interpret it to be the story of someone who's stuck in a rut, as others have said. However, to me it refers more to a struggle such as getting clean from drugs, a Vietnam veteran trying to move on with his life or a homeless man trying to get back on his feet but struggling and getting nowhere. Could this possibly refer to a busker? (Don't know much about Rafferty and his life)
Otherwise, it is a truly beautiful song and better than the cover. |

I have to agree with the prevailing opinion that it's the emotion behind this song that makes it so spectacular, moving and upsetting. Every time I hear this song, for me, I think of the friends I have lost... and the possibility of losing my fiancé. To me that's a special fear because she does not share my religious beliefs. Regardless of whether or not you believe what I do, you can understand the fear of losing someone for an eternity. |

To me it seems like there may be a deeper meaning within the song. It seems to me that the 'singer' appears to be seeking something dear to him. This may be a reference to an emptiness he feels that he may seek to fill through religion or romance. It IS very vague though. |

This song is difficult to decipher as it contains a lot of satirical elements, but may not actually be so. The surface message appears to be that "shit happens" and you should just get on with life and try to enjoy it. There may be a message about the trials of life or the wisdom that comes with age. |

I remember when I was struggling to ask out my best friend and first love, who I hold dear to this day. A friend played this song, and to this day it captures that time. Despite the fact that things didn't go well, I have held that message with me since then and I think everyone should hear this song and keep it in mind in future. |

I think it's likely that this song is probably about higher values related to people constantly hurting each other, hypocrisy and universal love. Regardless, it is inextricably linked, for me, to the first girl I ever loved who couldn't love me that same way. Still kinda makes me sad when I hear it years on, but at the same time proud of my life's experiences. |

I have to agree that on a moral level this song is a little repugnant, but it's so over-the-top you just have to laugh and enjoy it. Brings back memories of blasting it on the midnight shift at 7-11 when all the drunk teenagers came around. Good times. |

Have to admit I also laughed my arse off when my replacement( when I was leaving to return to Australia) got cautioned for playing "gothic music"... he was playing Offspring at low volume. |

Haha this song is awesome. It will always remind me of working the midnight shift in a 7-11 in Southern Canada, blasting the music at maximum volume and having little old ladies come in, sniggering to myself because if they paid any attention to what was being said in the music they'd have been mortified. |

| Tiffany – I Think We're Alone Now Lyrics

Regardless, I think we can all agree that the song is about young, care-free love. My personal interpretation is that of young love between long-term friends. I interpret this partly because of the line:
"Children behave
That's what they say when we're together
And watch how you play"
Which seems to indicate both a young age and that the children are not necessarily assumed to be in a relationship.
To me personally, this song brings to mind my life in Brisbane before moving to Sydney, playing with my neighbour. It also brings to mind my time spent in Southern Canada with my now fiancé, escaping the house and just rolling in the grass. (innocently) |

I'm not sure if there is a story behind the song. The prevailing interpretation, and mine, however is that the song is about two lovers who have been together since they were children. Emmaline wanted to be an actress, but couldn't get her big break and ends up committing suicide and leaving a deeply emotional love letter for the [singer]. Personally I think this is the saddest song ever written... yet I can't help but listen to it. |

Reading the comments here and referencing my own interpretation I would agree with detailrich. It's quite possible that the hame Shilo[h] is symbolic for the feelings felt with his imaginary friend. |

As best I can interpret the song is simply saying that he would much prefer to have his loved one than be rich. A "money can't buy happiness/love" message. |
