| Phish – Chalk Dust Torture Lyrics | 16 years ago |

It's also about Cocaine use/abuse; this double meaning was maybe/probably applied later but it is well known within the Phish subculture that "chalkdust torture" refers to a cocaine habit. But yes, primarily it is about wanting to get the F*** out of school and live |

| Phish – AC/DC Bag Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song is played often as an opener because it so poignantly captures the feeling of naked vulnerability that can turn into terror and then delight that one gets through the course of that anxiety-filled and transformative first set. Everyone brings their baggage to the show and some just want to pull down the blinds and run for cover because they can't hide their [secrets/secret self] anymore. There is also a feeling of urgency for those who just want their ego be executed and be done with it so they can build a new one and keep on living: let's get this show on the road... I'm breathing hard, open the door... best example -IT 1st night opener - god you could have cut the tension with a knife, my friend |

| Phish – Bug Lyrics | 16 years ago |

granted, this is my subjective interpretation: Trey did a little TOO much living in the moment, this song was his way of communicating his struggle with heroin addiction. For example: gold in my hand....in a [country] pool - appearance of melted heroin don't need it, don't feed it, my thoughts faded, OVERRATED Many people use psychedelics in a cycle to try to break addictions from opiates - (I) knew long ago that Trey was having a problem with this very issue because it was obvious to anyone with experience of these drugs. FYI i am sure it was the reason for BOTH hiatuses. This song always felt like that cry of him trying to tell himself to let go and stop trying to control everything, in other words, this song is about: SURRENDER |

| Phish – Sand Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Sand refers (like "Bug") to a feeling of smallness and insignificance (and thus, freedom) but also could (like "Bug") have another meaning: Sand (could be?) is actually a reference to the appearance and consistency of heroin, to which (we all must accept) trey anastasio was heavily addicted; the dark feel and lyrics of the song actually refer TO drug use directly, not to how society deals with them -Phish don't normally write songs with such overarching social-policy considerations, I'd love to see examples where they do, though if someone has some. |
