i think the phrase 'one after another' applies more to citizens than the leaders themselves. but i think i agree with daltonmunnal about it being more vague about screw-ups rather than about a particular person actually; they don't tend to be that specific with their lyrics.

i completely agree with you; although i am a christian, i'll be the first one to admit that i am so vastly imperfect. so many of us seem to have the mindset that we are better than other people simply because of who we are, and i think its amazing that they took this approach on this album; very humbling.

The Devil Wears Prada – Dez Moines Lyrics 16 years ago
zeivhann, every member of the band mentioned either jesus christ or god at some point in thank yous:
mike: "jesus christ, you have blessed us, the undeserving, unconditionally, and i will always owe you thanks"
chris: "...finally, thanks to god for creating me and loving me and blessing me with the ability to live the life that i do"
jeremy: "thanks to my lord and savior, jesus christ, who loves me no matter what mess i end up in"
daniel: "first and foremost, god"
james: "...and finally, jesus christ, if anyone has been supportive, protective, caring, and loving, it has been you"
andy: "first of all, i would like to give my thanks to god"

the band might have difficulties maintaining their faith in god, as you said, but i think that their love for god becomes more and more apparent with each record.

incredible answer; very eloquent, and i definitely agree. i honestly didn't think about it that much, so good point.

i agree. definitely the importance should be in making sure someone truly understands rather than scaring them into acceptance, which is what it sadly comes down to sometimes.

yeah i think you're totally correct. it sounds like its maybe about bush. in the beginning he had a lot of support, but after we had seen the outcome of his judgment [or lack thereof] people started to rip on him and make jokes about his leadership skills. they mention the word 'sagacity' which is wisdom; i think they're saying that although the president may not have made wise decisions, we ultimately made the decision to put him in office, and we need to stand behind him despite his stupidity. i really like the line 'so be angry at yourself, if only we did not deserve this.'

we reap what we sow.

this song is about looking to god for strength in hard times and striving to made of 'such elements.' it also seems to say maybe that god doesn't seem as present in the church.

i think this song is about how sometimes as christians, we lose our focus and forget what we stood for in the first place, when we were first so fervent in our salvation. it is a reminder of the message that truly is worth dying for and encouragement that our mistakes are able to be overcome. 'you can't bury conviction with anything' is nodding to the fact that we should have a kind of fervor for the message that cannot be overshadowed by other people's cynicism and doubt.

this song seems to be somewhat of a parallel to 'i hate buffering' in that he touches on how some artist's take advantage of their position and often advertise themselves over their art and their message. maybe he feels as though he has fallen into that trap, and he feels discouraged because he knows what he has to tell the audience is so much bigger than himself. the 'blemishes' he speaks of may just be the signs from the fans themselves that they've gotten off track and that he needs to focus on his primary concern, which is reaching the listeners with his 'vision.'

i think this song is talking about how christianity among a good majority seems to have become some sort of competition and people get high and mighty about whatever they think it is that they're doing to further themselves. it's saying that its better to i guess go at a pace that you can handle rather to makes ridiculous mistakes and have to 'write disappointing letters to integrity.' there is sort of a paradox of sorts where you 1) 'go faster when you've stopped and thought' and you think you know what the right thing to do is and 2) 'go slower when you've learned of wisdom' and you DO know the right thing.

'its not all about the numbers'--faith is NOT a competition. 'who should we look to if all we know is burning bridges'--we have no one to blame but ourselves when we undertake things we are not capable of handling and don't allow ourselves a way out of them.

i think the lyrics coming from the title of the album is such a beautiful metaphor: 'turn your thoughts to the roots, as we've been caught up in the branches.' christians are so concerned with winning people over to their faith sometimes that they forget that they can't maintain their testimony in christ if they themselves aren't right before god, so this is a warning to stay focused on their 'roots' in god, rather than being 'caught up in the branches.'

this is my interpretation; i'm sure you guys have your own opinions?

in a recent review [with shockhound, i believe] mike was talking about how so many bands are making music solely for the purpose of meeting girls and such, and how his main focus when composing their songs is not at all for that type of attention, and i think this song definitely touches on that aspect.

its a pretty straightforward song: people have perverted the meaning of being an artist and are using their 'celebrity character' for something more than just relaying their ideas to an audience. its become somewhat of a joke in some aspects, and for those who are 'not pretending' its difficult to be taken seriously like bands such as tdwp deserve to be. 'don't memorize these names' is clearly a nod to the fact that they want their music and their message to be the focus, rather than themselves.

this is what i've gotten out of it at least; maybe you guys have some different opinions.

musically, this song is incredible, beautifully intricate and brings the brutality of the bands talent that we all know and love.

for me personally, the best line in this song is 'as long as these struggles are aimless,
we will all be standing still.' it captures the intent of the song perfectly.

by far the best song on the album, musically at least.

this song is so beautiful, especially lyrically. i really love the lines 'and i know this isn't much, but i know i could be better...selflessness find your way into my heart.' it definitely makes me think more about how much better things would be if we all made an effort to be more selfless, though it may be a seemingly small gesture as compared to what christ did for us.

although this song is well written, i think they could have taken it a little bit farther maybe in its composition and given jeremy melodies more deserving of his incredible talent and voice. he is capable of so much more than this song; it just doesn't do him justice.

i agree with nuclearnatalie about the song being about materialism and such [and i was at the same sold out show on 3/27/09 in the atl], but i also think that they might be saying that alot of times, christians get all high and mighty, preaching about things they don't and can't fully comprehend [we've all sung of the end, but who truly understands it?] and you're speaking in vain [some words are useless] if you're only seeking your own profit, ie. medals, ribbons, and trophies.

what has come with such preaching is loneliness; pretty self explanatory, you're alienating yourself from others when you shove things in their faces.

if you are using your religion/faith to elevate yourself above others or even if you just don't completely know what you're talking about, even the most "whole-hearted" will be attacked in their time of "weakness," hence the "time of blood."

this is by far the most beautiful song i have ever heard. it makes me cry every single time i see them play it live.

i completely agree with weswearsprada, "it is an unimaginable feeling to have such a powerful connection with such a great being"; i'm getting these lyrics tattooed on my wrist: "i've been cleansed with the water, a purity no mind can grasp"
