The first verse reminds me of the phrase 'it will get worse before it gets better', but in a more selfish way, if that makes any sense. But the song in a whole makes me think of fate, and how we work out what it is, whether it's palmistry or crystal balls or whatever. And how maybe it doesn't make sense, but if it's fate, it's right. |

I can see the direction people are going about the song being about a relationship not working anymore, and I do agree with that in a way. But I also feel that it's about fear of shallowness and becoming materialistic. Maybe with the success of 'Lungs', Florence almost fears becoming less inspiring, maybe becoming almost a sellout. And she's looking to please her audience, but also herself and the life or the people she's known before her success. And she's saying that it's easy to talk about this kind of stuff to said audience, but to her closest friends, it's harder to and be at the risk of losing what she's worked for at the same time. Basically, I think she's saying she doesn't want to lose what she's always had, but what she has now is something she loves just as much. She's afraid of pleasing one at the risk of hurting the other. |

To me, the first verse is about believing yourself to be...let's say, in the right world. Then one day you realise you're not, but you can't get out of it because something holds you back. And when you realise that it's very VERY apparent. The chorus speaks of very simply, waking up and realising that you were wrong about all your childish dreams and optimisms ("no more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone") because life really isn't like that at all, and it's far more bitter and cruel. The last line of the second verse, I think explains what it was like in that world and saying once again that nothing's like that in reality and you have to get out of it. The bridge is about how fairytales aren't real at all, and how you can't see that, so someone has to confirm it for you and how normally it's those things that you believed in so much before. Anyway, it's really just an amazingly put together song. :) |

I love the idea of escaping...like the nightingale. I think it's referring to being beautiful and wanting to be free, but you're trapped in this cage, which I think means 'trapped in this world', which is golden and perfect, but in reality it's bedlam. I'm not sure what the whole owl and dead boy thing is about, but I think the dead boy is Tuomas, and the owl is his flight; how he escapes, and the owl's knocking on his window, telling him to get away. The whole virgin snow part is like Tuomas hasn't been this way before, and he's treading his way and it's never ending. Then when the chorus comes, I think it's like...he's going this way, but he's still trapped. He needs to find a better way out, but he doesn't know what it is. 'Journey homeward bound Sound of a dolphin calling Tearing off the mask of a man The tower is my sole guide' I think this is Tuomas going home, to his childhood home in the wood (he said that he used to live in big house in the wood)and all his fantasy is there. He's tearing off this mask he's been putting on and going to this tower which I'm guessing is his guide; a place where he gets his inspiration from. 'This is who I am, Esacapist, paradise seeker Farewell,now time to fly, 'Out of sight, out of time, away from all lies' This is saying Tuomas is an Escapist, and he's going to fly away now, he's out of the cage and he's free so he's going to go somewhere where no one can find him because he has to go now (out of time) and he's escaping all the lies in the world. He's basically saying, overall, he wants to be free. He IS the nightingale. |

Amy Lee is a very dramatic person and this song is one of her most depressing songs ever. Actually, all of her songs are depressing-she is down in loooooow if she feels sad enough to write about this stuff. I mean, I know it's about her sister, but writing some more stuff about a stalker (snow white queen) isn't going to make her any happier. I really do think she is a depressed person. You might call them amatuer because Sharon Den Adel never had any proper training, but if you didn't know, her brilliant vocals play a major role in the band, as all vocals do in a band. And I don't think they're overrated, to be honest. Give me one good reason why they're overrated. Just because everyone is saying that Ice Queen is a good song, it doesn't mean they get more credit than they need or deserve. And what the hell do you mean by crude lyrics?
