Mindless Self Indulgence – Never Wanted to Dance Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about being molested/raped by someone older. "too cool for the second grade" refers to a predator grooming someone by telling them that they seem much more mature than they are, and they're ready for sex even though they're too young for it. "never wanted to dance" refers to being a virgin, maybe someone who never had a strong interest in sex and wasn't ready for it. "wouldn't take no for an answer you fucking bitch" is the part where the protagonist is forced/coerced into sex. "there's nothing you can do that I've not already done to myself" relates to the guilt/beating yourself up and low self-esteem and introversion that comes with being molested. The lingering emotional pain of the guilt and feeling worthless is worse than the actual rape/molestation itself, so the protagonist feels that the rape and shame of it isn't any worse than the self-inflicted mental anguish that he does to himself.

Devo – Mongoloid Lyrics 13 years ago
I originally saw this song as a sarcastic comment on the typical PC attitude that we can't judge those who are less than us, or that disabled/primitive people are actually happier than the "enlightened" or "evolved" types. The "Happier than you and me" lyric especially references this. Think of anthropologists who claim that people are happier in primitive societies, because they are blissfully ignorant of the worries of the post-industrial world and have less to think about, because they're concentrating on the day-to-day labor of just staying alive. "Determined what he can see" refers to the fact that the Mongoloid had a limited viewpoint that made him happy. Thinking of "simpler" people as happier discounts the fact that, despite their happiness, their simpleness is still a defect -- at least from our viewpoint. Mongoloids and primitive people have a shorter lifespan and are less equipped to deal with the misery that they do face.

You could also interpret this song much more simply and say that it's just a statement that ignorance is bliss, and if everyone is ignorant, no one will know you are, etc.

The Birthday Massacre – Nothing and Nowhere Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with the previous interpretations. This song is about a personification of Death, and how the peaceful nothingness of death is preferable to living and enduring pain. Whatever pain we're in, we can always be saved by Death.

The Birthday Massacre – Horror Show Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought about all of these interpretations, and about what the song meant to me when I originally heard it, and tried to synthesize something. The comment about this being sort of an egotistical thing for the band really helped everything fall in place for my interpretation.

I became interested in the meaning of this song recently when I incidentally ran into someone I used to know who made fun of me when we were younger, and who thought she was much better than me. She still resents me, but now she resents me because her family life that she thought was perfect turned to crap, her popularity is gone now that she's out of school, and I've been successful due to my own efforts in the meantime.

"Horrorshow" came to mind, as when I first heard the song, I felt it had something to do with the members of the band imagining going home as successes and seeing the people who used to think they were better than them because they were more popular. Because these people based their lives around popularity, they haven't really gone anywhere, and now they're jealous of the bands' success.

This interpretation fit, except for a few lyrics. For example, "We are dead long before we run out of time." That could refer to their friendship being dead (my original thought), but that doesn't seem quite right. However, if I add in the interpretation that the band is on an ego trip in this song, it could mean that, although they are initially the victors, having been more successful than their childhood friends/enemies, their success in the music industry will ultimately be fleeting. It will be over long before they die. So perhaps they would have rather been forgiving and had the friendship of the people they knew rather than just revel in being better than them for now.
