here is the thing, I think yeah, he directly references christian metaphors and such, but I think Dustin does a real good job of keeping things...I guess neutral. anyone of any religion can take away a message from this song, along with many of his other songs that are more spiritual or philosophical. the only song i think he tries to be specific to christianity is like moths to flame. Specific example, I am a Muslim, and all of his songs have never once reflected anything different than my faith. even if you aren't a specific religion, his lyrics can still be used in a metaphorical sense, which is why i think that he is able to write the best lyrics hands down. |

I have a problem with people saying thrice is using spiritual things like this as "Jesus" or Christian references. Don't get me wrong, I know that's what he is doing. But one thing I really like about Thrice is that they keep stuff like this ambiguous in the sense it could be pegged to almost any religion or spiritual/personal belief. Even Atheism (someone leaves behind a good part of themselves, only to come back and realize they were bad or had no significant attempt at helping humanity). I am personally a Muslim, and this song fits just as perfectly for me as it would for a Christian if he was referring to God as the narrator. |

I don't think it matters if you are an atheist or not. He's pointing out that you may consider yourself good simply because you didn't do anything bad. Someone might not have killed or stole, but they never helped those who needed help, or tried to make the world a better place. It doesn't have to be someone dead looking back, it could be someone about to die seeing life's pleasures as pointless. |

to cannafield, anarchy isn't the same mentality as a full on political system. Everyone knows that any political system that only follows it's idealogies and nothing else is horribly flawed. Even the US isn't a full democracy, or a full capitalism, because those are horrible. and to say that if no one stopped the nazi's, the world would be in a bad place? You know the nazi's were only brought to power by French and British Impirialism, right? That if they weren't so exploitative and hierachical, WWII would have never happened because the Nazi's would have not had the ability to rise to power. War spawns war, and if you end all the hierachies, debts, and boundries, you end up with peace. That's the overall concept of anarchy. |
