Might be totally off here - But could this be from his past self to the person he is now? "You crying, tragic waste of skin. I'm well aware of how it aches. " He's well aware of how it aches because.. its him? "A song to say, Before our innocence was lost " Notice the 'our'? "Someone to whom I could relate.
