I'm not trying to take anything from this song. The truth is that I have always thought that Chicago (Transit Authority as they were originally known until the CTA of Chicago sued them) was one of the truly great bands of the time and still could be. They were one of only three bands that I know of that made top 40 charts and used brass with BS&T being one of the other two and Hreb Alpert and the TJB being the other...yes, there were others but not ones who had the top 40 chart history of these three. Anyway, I stray from my point, and my point is that Chicago put out many beautiful lyrics and music because of the lyrics of James Pankow and his love of classical music. It was a derivation of a suite called "Ballet For a Girl in Buchannon". "Make Me Smile" was also written from this musical piece of Pankow's. You can check all of this out by referring to Wikipedia - Chicago (band). Enjoy the music of an extremely talented band and the history lesson is free. |

And by-the-way, the song ends with just two "feed your head". The second is longer than the first and continues until the music ends. If you are going to QUOTE something...then quote it correctly. |

It is very obvious to me that none of you have ever read any material on the literary "Alice in Wonderland" let alone the story itself. It is a novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It was a story that he told to three little girls who he was taking care of for the headmaster of the university he attended. They were the headmaster's daughters and it was the birthday of one of them. SO, he told this fantasy story to amuse the girls (especially the b-day girl), and she (the b-day girl) liked it so much that she asked him to put it to paper for her. Reluctantly he did so but only after three years of putting it and her off. He then had it published, and it soared at the bookstores and news stands. The whole conjuring of the story was written at a time when drugs were seriously frowned upon and even more seriously punished. All of the characters in the story were people that were well known in and around the university. Of couse when Grace Slick wrote this song, I am quite sure that her references do clearly indicate the use of illegal non-prescribed drugs and their effects on the user. Whether it is a "say no to drugs" or an advocation for their usage I have been unable to discover, and Grace Slick has never said in any of the interviews that she has done. So, my point is that you are ALL theorising and none of it can be proven. |
