One of the best parts of this song is the way that the lyrics cut against the music. While Thom is singing "don't get any big ideas", the music literally swells with hope and desire. For me, the lyrics seem like someone's rational mind trying to unsuccessfully control the direction of his emotions and passions. |

While I agree that the girl isn't his usual type, I think it may be the opposite: she may be much more traditional or religious than he is. His refrain "I'm evil" may be about a culture clash that he's trying to suppress between himself, guy who is an atheist or nihilist, and his partner who is a believer of one sort or another.
The zombie metaphor about "eating her brains" may also be his anxiety about destroying the way in which she views the world, that somehow being part of her life may actually ruin her. |
