Tom Petty – Turn This Car Around Lyrics 13 years ago
"Save a dream for me/ words hang in the air / her demons take the dare"
-The character is about to 'take the dare' of something bad "save a dream for me" is referring to her knowing she's taking the wrong path - wishes she'd lead a different life

"Above, a lonely feather
Circles to the ground
The house don't make a sound"

-Paints the picture of a bad/lonely place

"Turn this car around
Turn this car around
I'm goin' back"

-In this part of the song the verse means I know I shouldn't be here, turn around and get me out of here

"Green and grey and auburn
Sliding down the sky
The devil winks an eye
A figure in the doorway
Shouldering the blame
A saint without a name"

-Character's demons still get the best of itself(the devil is 'winning'). The figure in the doorway shouldering the blame is the drug dealer, He provided the goods but is only known as a dealer therefore is "a saint without a name"

Turn this car around
Turn this car around
I'm goin' back
I'm goin' back
Yeah!
Hey!

-The narrator who has attempted to stay away, is now tempted and joins the 'queen'

"The king and queen are loaded
Falling off to sleep
The ground begins to creep"

-Both of them are now 'loaded'(this term is often used when high on heroin) They fall off to sleep as everything begins to move slow, another reference to being high on heroin.

"Rockets in the taillights
Red burns into night
Rolling outta sight"

-The narrator realizes what he has done and does his best to get out of the situation as fast as he can/trys to get as far away from it as he can.

"Turn this car around
Turn this car around
I'm goin' back "

-The final verse of the song has taken on a different meaning as is noted by the sad tone of "i'm going back.." The narrartor is once again tempted (perhaps by both the drugs and the girl)and heads back as he gives in to his demons

I see this song being sung from the Man/Narrators perspective. He's in love with a girl who probably isn't good for him as she has her demons as well. The demons get the best of her and she heads off to use. He does his best to try to stay away, but eventually gives in. Everything is okay while they are high (King and Queen) but he realizes what he has done and figuratively speeds away. However at the end of the song he is once again tempted (i'm going back) and presumably gives in to temptation once again.

-I've also seen this song as just from the narrators perspective - someone who gives into their demons and has had trouble walking the straight line as he is attempted over and over again. Either way i def feel this song is about temptation, wishing for something better and wishing theyd made better choices as the temptation will always be there.

Bruce Springsteen – Straight Time Lyrics 13 years ago
One thought to support that he did kill himself in reference to sawing of the shotgun - If you were going to kill yourself with a shotgun you'd almost have to saw off a portion of it in order to reach the trigger while pointing it at yourself. He can't move on even if hes trying to live the right way, goes out and takes a final breath of fresh air, and this time "Got a cold mind to go tripping cross that thin line" has a different meaning not that he has the urge to live a criminal life but that he realizes he can never move on, and the thought of killing himself arises, because the last thing he wants to do is serve "straight time". He drinks beer to get the courage to do it. The 13 inches of barrel dropping to the floor isn't the saw'd off part of the gun, but rather the "sawd off" shotgun itself dropping to the floor as he kills himself. The last phrase of 'come home in the evening, can't get the smell from my hands' is his realization that he killed himself (Go driftin' off in foreign lands)and realizes he can't change what was done.
-That's just my take on it but agree it could be seen anyway, and afterall that is what makes this music so great. It should be interpreted however the listener takes it. All songs have different meanings to different people.

The Charcter in the song comes out of Jail and starts trying to live the "Straight Life" but is finding it hard. Even Mary, who we can assume is his wife, seems tentative about him:

"Mary's smilin', but she watches me out of the corner of her eye
Seems you can't get any more than half free"

I think it paints a good picture of people who have been locked up for a long time and how hard it is for them to get a job, or even just be trusted in general.

As for what he's doing with the shotgun, ...He uses the hacksaw to saw off the shotgun, drinks some beer and kills himself "Sip of beer and thirteen inches of barrel drop to the floor" - No matter what he does he just can not seem to live the straight life, and everyone, including his wife still judge him on the past.

The last paragraph is used for symbolizm "Can't get the smell from my hands, lay my head down on the pillow and go driftin off in foreign lands" Can't get the smell from my hands means he can't change what hes done, and driftin off in foreign lands can refer to the afterlife.

-Another take could be that he did his time in jail, comes out but just finds it so hard to live "the straight life" (Got a cold mind, to go tripin cross that thin line, i'm sick of doing straight time"
Whatever it was that he did to be in jail for 18years, perhaps killing - he "trips across that thin line" and goes out and kills again, and he can't change what he's done "Can't get the smell from my hands"

Blue October – Still Broken Lyrics 15 years ago
This is my favorite of their's that is not on a cd. For those of you who haven't heard it, you can hear it on youtube.

I believe this song is basically about him being hurt from a relationship. No matter what he or she ever does this will never change:

"And don't you know, don't you know I'd die for just a lie from you, yeah, a token
And even though, even though I know it could never heal, my heart's still broken"

The lie he'd die to hear from her would be "I still love you, or I'm sorry" which would give him some closure, and maybe a little satisfation but it still won't heal his broken heart, nothing ever will.

I think most of the previous poster's have gotten the interpetaion right, at least thats how I see it. I def think the "the rest left un-named because the worked like a charm on me" is about his drug use. I believe that when he refers to the anti-depresants having no side effects, he's saying that maybe they didn't really have any bad side effects, but they really didn't work for him - where as with drugs, he somehow felt that they helped him, but they obviously had negative side effects (hurting his friends and family, lying, the withdrawling without it etc etc) So the anti-depresants might have no side effects, but they didn't work for him, while drugs did work in a sense, or so he thought - but had really bad side effects.

I also love the lines

"If what youre seeing is an open book
Thats great well Im an open book
But Im real shy"

I take this as him feeling like no one really understands him, that he is truly an open book but "the pages don't read themselves" so to speak. He's a shy person, hes not going to just come out and spill everything, but if someone would "read his book" he's not going to hide anything.

Yes! me too! Such a great song...I know that feeling, I've been there and can relate to it. I think most of us have all been a "drifter" at some point in our life.

Bruce Springsteen – You're Missing Lyrics 15 years ago
My interpretation of "God's drifting in heaven/ Devil's in the mailbox" is obviously a loved one has been lost, they've "received" the bad news, and that person is now in heaven, and their lover or whoever knows they are with God, but it's hell here without them. "Got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops" Both figuratively and literally, dust on his shoes...the person is sad and can't move on with out there love one.
