The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song.

The song starts off by describing the trap that is money. Going through life just trying "to make ends meet" but eventually becoming "a slave to the money." Money and materialism has become a large form of control in our lives. Throughout the song, the singer is struggling to change from being a materialist and a slave to money.

Going back and forth from saying that he can or cannot change, the singer realizes that he has been molded by society. He can't change the mould but instead has to break free from the mould. The singer eventually breaks down, and recognizes that he need to change. Eventually the singer cleanses his mind, and "feels free."

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down...
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the things meet, yeah.

Even though we have many different choices and opportunities, we still follow one path from birth to death. Life is bittersweet in many ways, and should be accepted for its faults. Let go of materialism, nothing can ever bring you lasting happiness. True happiness comes from within. The pleasure that arises from money, drugs, and sex will always be fleeting.

Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics 16 years ago
I have always liked this song. Suzanne Vega's voice is used beautifully in this song. A few days ago the song came on random and I just felt as if I understood it. I know other's have touched on similar meanings. But here is my interpretation. (I wrote it assuming the main character was female. The person doesn't have to be either gender, it could be anyone.)

The song seems to be about living in today's society. Each person has their own life, and most are isolated from one another. The main character is a woman whom seems to be lonely in her isolated world. She is looking if people notice her ("Does she see me?") and distracting herself in between (e.g. ignoring the greeting between the two acquaintances, looking through the paper, listening to the cathedral bells and thinking of someone's voice). The loneliness that she embodies seems to be a shared loneliness in today's society. We are social beings, and usually are looking to connect with someone. When on our own we tend to occupy our minds with our own thoughts or outside distractions (e.g. reading, writing, music, etc...). At other times we tend to seek contact with another, be it that casual hello or even a moment of eye contact.

Suzanne Vega seems to be telling a story that expands further than the main character. The man behind the counter and the woman who walks in seem to have their own separate lives, isolated from the main character. The woman looking inside is going about her own life. She doesn't acknowledge anyone in the diner, only focusing on herself. The dead actor whom the main character does not recognize, was just another person drifting along through this world. Some people may know (remember) you and others will not. As if we live in our little worlds which sometimes may connect with others.

Pink Floyd – Welcome to the Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
I completely agree with bloodomen's post.

The machine is programming that everyone receives throughout their lives. The programming is everything people believe in, hopes, goals, wishes, etc... For example, the common conception of an ideal life, go to grade school then on to college/grad school, get a job, start a family, buy a house, retire, and die. The machine is basically a path laid out to everyone, deciding your fate. It's a form of control.

The song does seem to hint at the nature vs. nurture debates. The song seems to be in the point of view of a father opening his sons eyes to the machine. The father shows how both parents decided the son's fate, just by the way they raised him.

"What did you dream? It's alright, we told you what to dream."

I am fairly sure this song is a comment on society. I am still trying to figure the specifics. Great song though.

Arcade Fire – Ocean of Noise Lyrics 16 years ago
I am pretty sure that this song is not just referring to a relationship between two people. Instead it is also referring to the relationships between everything and everybody in this world. When I hear this song, I hear two similar stories being told, one being about a couple and the other about everyone.

"An ocean of noise
I first heard your voice"
The ocean of noise is everything connecting everyone and everything on this planet. It is the human interaction, nature, politics, economics, etc...

"Now who here among us
Still believes in choice?
Not I"
The speaker seems to be doubting free will because the ocean of noise limits free will. "Choice" is affected and determined by the world around us (i.e. physics, governments, societies, jobs, etc).

"No way of knowing
What any men will do
An ocean of violence
Between me and you"
This verse pretty much sums up the ocean of noise. It's unpredictable.

At the end of the song, the speaker thinks it's time for both the couple and the world to "work it all out."
