The first time I heard this song, I couldn't help but smile and laugh a bit. It describes a visit to the dentist's office perfectly, but in a rather comical way (and not to mention with good beats.) But am I the only one that finds the tiniest bit of "dark" humor in this? "Open up nice and wide," he says peering in And with a smirk he says "don't have a fit, this'll just pinch a bit," as he tries not to grin & But somehow I still get the chills I don't know, but that verse and line remind me of the scare dentist give me. |D |

I'm truly surprised there are so few posts on this song, lol. But I agree, I think this song is about how the guy realizes he's holding the girl back, and he loves her enough to let her go. I think she's not reluctant to go, but she pretends to be because she doesn't want to hurt him. He sees through it, though, and begins to urge her more and more to go. |

My good friend simply loves Boys Like Girls, so I hope my memory does some justice as to what she told me when it comes to the meaning behind this song. It's about the singer, Martin, and how he grew up too fast, and lost his virginity when he was 14 on a choir trip to Disneyland. The "girl" in this, though, seems to want nothing more than to grow up and get it over with. I believe the "dance hall drug" is just the high of the excitement of the moment, and how she gets so caught up in the adrenaline rush she forgets to think about what she's really doing. Once it begins to happen, though, she realizes what's going on and wants out, but it's too late. <3 |

I agree with a lot that has been said about this song, and how there are so many ways it can be interpreted. But I've only skimmed through this, and I don't know if anyone else has seen it the way I do, so if I repeat anything, I'm sorry. I see it as a song in which she's about to be killed, and her life is flashing before her eyes. There's a lot of good interpretations on this song, really. I think the greatest thing with the Goriallz is that there's always room for lots of interpretation :) But I think there's a deeper meaning to this song: I think it's suggesting and speaking about the world of sex just to have sex. That today, in this world, people just have sex to... have it. There's no beauty, no modesty, no LOVE in it anymore. It's just a sport. Yet in the chorus, it reminds us all that love isn't something to be taken for granted. Windmill, windmill for the land Learn forever, hand in hand --- We must learn that to take things, we must treasure them forever and not just use them while their useful Take it all in on your stride It is sticking, falling down --- Take things as they come to you. I don't think this song is suggesting something dirty, but hey, you never know. My general idea for this song, though, is that Brandon (the singer) is very optimistic, but also very prone to being hurt. He lets himself get too attached, too quickly. He may have fallen for a girl after a single kiss or something, thinking she was completely wonderful and perfect. But he later on learns the girl he so quickly fell for isn't all that good. Smoking, cheating, and sex is suggested in this song as stuff he found out about this girl, yet he either: doesn't want to let her go, as she's the one, hence Mr. Brightside, meaning he'll always love her. Or He's ready to move on, even though deep down inside, it's killing him. So he puts up a fake front for everyone else: Mr. Brightside. I dunno, just what I got ;) Good song no matter what. |

This is by far... the mos inspirational song I've ever heard. I've done several "Songfics" based on Death Cab's songs, my favorite being one based off of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark". But I'm sure that once I finally get around to it, I will definitely enjoy writing one based off of this. I've done an incredible amount of research to the meaning of this song, and basically, in summary, is that a woman named Sarah (she was the wife of Gibbard's friend, and what she says actually kinda based the whole album," was walking with her husband, when she suddenly began crying, going on painfully how one of them would have to watch the other die -'who's going to watch you die?'-. Through this song, he expresses the pain in an ICU about losing a loved one, but how if you truly love someone, the love will be strong enough to last until their gone for good. The song is smooth and jerks sensitive strings in my heart, but it's just as flawlessly done as falling in love is itself. BUT... I've found there is more... much more.
