everybody is 100% entitled to their view, and i think that even though maybe a bit over analyzed, you guys have discussed it and brought in your views pretty well. although, here is yet another concept that i get. james grew up in a science-based christian family. (for the record) the message i get from this song is that the prince of darkness is dispelling FALSE RELIGION into peoples heads, making them think they are doing the right things for God, and living in His grace, but in reality they are blinded by the evil illusoinist(the devil if you didnt catch on) lyrix to back it up- FOLLOW YOU FROM THE DAWN OF TIME a possible refrence to adam and eve, the forbidden fruit, and the devil appearing as a serpant and persuading them to eat it WHISPER THOUGHTS INTO YOUR MIND provide false senses and religion, withough us knowing (i.e. "WHISPER") thanks and rock on Metal heads! \M/ |

its tough to bring every song Metallica sings to terms of seriousness, but most of them really do go deeper than skin deep. on to the four horsemen...my interpertation is one of almost a judgement day, a sort of ultimatum. WITH THE FOUR HORSEMEN RIDE, OR CHOOSE YOUR FATE AND DIE and PESTILENCE FOR WHAT YOUVE HAD TO ENDURE AND WHAT YOUVE PUT OTHERS THROUGH DEATH DELIVERANCE FOR YOU FOR SURE NOW THERES NOTHING YOU CAN DO as a sort of accounting of ones past sins, they are comin back to bite you in the ass! metal up it btw and Metallica for life! |

i personally see this song as a sort of coping mechanism, THEY, THEY'LL BETRAY, IM FOREVER THERE interpert the mechanism as what you want, drugs, alcohol, a sort of sin, anything...a way out. saying 'you can always come to me when everything else goes bad. and 'I'M YOU' the coping mechanism eats you away 'IM INSIDE, OPEN YOUR EYES' it has wholly consumed your life and in the end of the song, HATE, IM YOUR HATE, IM YOUR HATE WHEN YOU WANT LOVE the cope has become the addiction, all one thinks about, but it turns into a lifestyle, you start to hate yourself for it. maybe wrong, maybe right. i love metallica though |

though the song may have been written about his mother's heroine addiction or cancer or his father's cancer, or his battle with abusing alcohol, or what ever, this song is truly for the listener, in a sense that it is for your interpertation, like for however it speaks to you personally. here are some of the lyrics and what they mean to me: I RUN BUT IT STAYS RIGHT BY MY SIDE he tries to escape the addiction but he cannot DONT WANT IT, WANT IT, WANT IT, NO....SO TEAR ME OPEN BUT BEWARE... the point in addiction where you know you shouldnt do it and you know its bad, but the horrible temptation is there and you give in THERES THINGS INSIDE THAT SCREAM AND SHOUT inside him he knows he is torn because of the addiction;this embodies his two sides, the sane and addicted sides, providing almost a bi-polarity so much for analyzing it...i love metallica anyway they come! |
