| Mika – Rain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think this is a song about someone ending a relationship they've been in for years, after finally realising that they could never be themselves with the person they were with, because they were always trying to be 'ordinary' in order to please them. The character here has finally realised that he's ready for more that this and so leaves. In the chorus I think it's partly he's walking in the rain and it's kind of raining in his mind because despite him realising he's better out of it, it upsets him (of course). Also, I think 'When it rains It rains More than this' (the chorus) could mean that things could be worse than this? Just guessing here :s Wonderful song. |

| Travis – The Beautiful Occupation Lyrics | 16 years ago |

From listening to the song, I thought it was about 9-11, because it came out in 2003 and could have been written about that. But then, I think really it just refers to any war or terrorist attacks or any mass killing. A beautiful and tragic song. |

| Duke Special – Salvation Tambourine Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think this is about searching for God and feeling like He's deserted you. 'Sunday-bells', 'a salvation tambourine', 'Holy Ghost', and 'Jerusalem' are all references to Christianity, as is the idea that he could 'jump from the tower' to find God (I think meaning like by suicide he could get to Heaven and see if He really exists). I think it's about someone who's looses someone close to them 'I heard from Canada, The day she died' and was very depressed afterwards, and took up smoking ('I packed a lung with smoke') and drinking ('bloodshot vision'), but wants to try and find God again, although he's sort of lost faith in him. Personally, I'm not religious, but it's easy to tell from Duke Special's other songs that he is. This is a masterpiece - I love the crazy ending on the album version. |

| Duke Special – Nothin’ You Could Do Can Bring Me Round Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song, Duke Special said on his DVD, is based on a book he read about a man loosing his memory (I think it's Man Walks Into a Room, by Nicole Krauss) and feeling like he doesn't know who he is and isn't ready to live. I guess I ought to read the book to understand properly, but I love the song! I think the song 'I never thought this day would come' is also based on the same book. |

| Duke Special – Last Night I Nearly Died Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I always thought this song was about a relationship in which the narrator feels he's lying to the person he's with ('I'm not who you think I am, I slipped a stranger inside'), and that they don't know him, possibly due to secrets he's not telling them (Cant put this off forever, I've got to tell you some time). Still, no matter what it's about it's a wonderful, truly amazing song! :D |

| Lily Allen – Chinese Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Just to make everyone clear on the British culture front of the song... It says 'A Chinese' because that's what we say here when we get a take away - 'a Chinese' or 'An Indian' or whatever you're getting. And Beans on Toast necessarily a mum thing, really, it's just quickish food that's yummy and if you got back like fairly late at night it's what you eat because it's easy. I think it would be about her mum or a relationship - just someone she's close to and wants to relax with, really. |

Lol, that is how us British say it. I'm going to get 'a chinese' or I'm going to get 'an indian' is how we talk about getting food take aways. I never realised that you didn't say that over in the USA... |

For some reason, this song always reminds me of King Henry VIII. I think it's probably the 'my face on ev'ry coin engraved' bit, along with some comparisons with Greensleeves, despite that being a very old song, which was rumoured to have been written by Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn. 'All the victories I've led haven't brought you to my bed' makes me think of that. And then also, the stuff about war - in those days, in England, usually decided by Kings, and about being 'Heaven's Child', because kings thought they were chosen by heaven, and about the 'first-born boy', because he wanted an air badly. But whatever it's about, I love the song! :D |

| Badly Drawn Boy – Promises Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think it's about a proposal, but making sure that if you say yes you mean it with all your heart. And that sometimes, if it's not right, you 'just have to walk away'. | |

I love this song so much. I think it's from the point of view of an old man (maybe BDB thinking about himself when he's older), thinking about the future of him and his wife/partner. It's them coming back to the they first met - 'the place where I first saw you' - maybe literally or metaphorically, and thinking back on their lives together. I think that the 'future's not bright' because they're getting older, and that he's worried he might not be around forever - 'Another funeral, All the people I know, Are beginning to fade away, And I have to say that at least today, It's beginning to get me down'. It seems like they've been together for a long time and are in love, but the future of their lives, not their love, is uncertain. Just my ideas but hey. Might not be right. It's BDB's partner who does the backing vocals at the end, which is very sweet. Masterpiece of a song :D |

I don't think this song is about a break up at all. I think it's more about a break, and two people in a relationship parting ways to follow their dreams but agreeing to find each other and be together again later - 'You know I'm not the kind to say that it's over. We'll be rubbing shoulders once again in the sun.' It sounds more optimistic in the future of their relationship. Best Badly Drawn Boy song ever :D |
