I agree that it is the best song on the album. It has such a good message. Someone hurts you, messes with you, tries to ruin you.. the best thing you can do is just get on with your life, get away from them, and survive. Because they will just live on with their blues and 'never fly'. Yea, jerks can really only hurt themselves. |

Okay guys, I want to provide a possible alternate version. As you may know, three different men collaborated to write this song and it is possible that each had something different in mind. Jay-Z also wrote his own rap verse so he could have even had something totally different in mind. -Nuclear umbrella refers to a guarantee by a nuclear weapons state to defend a non-nuclear allied state. -In April 2008, Hillary Clinton made headlines by proposing extension of the US nuclear umbrella over Israel and other American allies in the Middle East. Yes, so some people propose that this song is about the US and Israel. The US has vowed to stand by and protect Israel come whatever rain & stormy weather. Lines that support this: "You have my heart And we'll never be worlds apart May be in magazines " -US is devoted to Israel, even though the physical distance between them is great (in magazines they are far apart) they are allies (never worlds apart) "These fancy things Will never come in between You're part of my entity Here for infinity When the war has took it's part When the world has dealt it's cards " -US might have a lot of fancy stuff, and a lot of other countries might try to interfere.. it might seem like the US doesn't need Israel, but they still stand together. Talking about the war... there is basically constant battling in and around Israel (Palestine vs Israel), but the US imagines that eventually there will be "sunny weather" Its been raining for a long time (always fighting for Israel) and the US is still holding the umbrella. Well.. its just a possibility that I've heard before. Just an example of how not all pop songs are about sex or dancing if you just listen to a song instead of making vacuous assumptions. Although songs about sex aren't any worse or better than any other songs. "I want to hold your hand" (The Beatles) is basically jut about sex and it is a classic, excellent song. |

Okay well I think this song is about working out (fixing the problems in) all aspects of your life! You and your lover -> work it out You and society -> work it out You and yourself -> work it out and then just explaining the song in the last verse I suppose. They aren't saying they know everything or that they're judging people and their problems, they're just saying if a song can help then try to work it out. I love the song and I love how someone different does each verse and Dave Matthew's smooth, dreamish voice links them all together. |

I agree with this. Although later it seems like he can't decide if he likes her better dead or alive. "Man bet she was alright When she was alive" Its possible that this just refers to way back before she got into so much partying and drinking/drugs. Of course he does just say its just a crazy story song, so probably a lot of crazy things are just combined in. I like it though! |

To the lot that dislike this song: I didn't like it either at first but now I just adore it. It seems so haunting and kind of primal like he just needs to protect his family from the fussing and fighting. Honestly its a good attitude. Everyone has had someone troublesome around and we know we've just got to get away from them. |
