I guess Amy felt "dead" inside, and only this one person made her feel alive again, or attempted to. That's what i have always got from it, this one person could only see she was sad through her smiles. I read somewhere that the true meaning was about a person Amy once knew, he could see her for who she really was which was a sad, lost girl. "How can you see into my eyes, like open doors?" |

My interpretation is that this song is singing to someone who denied the singer (or the person’s point of view) they denied them “Why have you waited to embrace me, my dear?” They never felt the same towards this person, perhaps they where betrayed and found it hard to embrace this person again. I personally think an affair could have taken place, the person who this person was in a relationship was hurt and felt betrayed, and unloved. Despite the betrayed person coming back to the cheater. “WAITED to embrace me my dear,” They obviously came back. “Cold in your silence,” When someone does not speak to another, it breaks the heart. Have you ever heard the saying “Words hurt, but silence breaks the heart”? This silence was obviously cold and hurtful towards this person, and the person who was using the silence on another had obviously given up hope on this person who had had an affair with someone else outside the relationship. The betrayed person “waited to embrace” the speaker. They obviously found it hard to hug or touch this person again, even love. They were in too deep betrayal and hurt. This person’s point of view obviously had a close relationship with this betrayed person, even though this person denied the person, Sharon maybe? Sharon was still calling their name through her tears, still cared about them, and wanted to be close, despite what she had done. Perhaps this person left her, because they where betrayed, a partner maybe? And they came back to her. “Why have you WAITED to embrace me, my dear?” This person and Sharon had been waiting to be reunited, through the betray and all that had happened, or all that Sharon had done to upset this one person. “In my heart i still hope, you will open the door” Open the door to what? I think this line suggests that this was to open the door to that person’s heart and accept Sharon once again? To love her again? Or to open the door to simply a home, that these two people once shared, Sharon was kicked out? OVER ALL, i think an affair had taken place, and the hurt partner found it hard to come to terms with this situation. I am NOT saying this is true, that Sharon did indeed cheat on a partner and broke their heart, nor do i know anything as such. But this is just my theory and had always been ever since i first listened to this song. Everyone else’s interpretations are very interesting. Although i do not think religion plays any part in this song, expect merely for an example of the situation this song is playing on. |
