| The Dismemberment Plan – 8.5 Minutes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Thought I would mention that no one on Earth would know that the Sun was out in those 8 1/2 minutes. We would still be getting light and have no idea that it went out since no signal that it would was out could travel faster than the light itself (which of course would be the best signal). I'm pretty convinced he is talking about some God who decided to put out the Sun to kill everyone on Earth, not like the Biblical one never did that before. He is asking what it was thinking when it put it out (Was it mean, was it petty...) and if it felt bad for doing it. Some sort of religious meaning also fits with the last line and about going to heaven. | |

The last bit before the Heys goes: "Just be honest with me, honestly, honestly; unless it hurts my feelings." Perfectly describes the culture this song describes :) |

its not just about being able to empathize with others, i think its literally feeling what everyone else in the world is feeling...and i get the feeling he is considering what it would feel like to be God. except its not a good feeling to him, and he doesnt think anyone can actually get to God, as evidenced by the "silvery towers" surrounded by endless rocks, and all the awful feelings that others feel. crazy song. |

i definitely see all those parallels williford and most those lines at the end also have to do with events in Chicago. the fire is fairly obvious and the curse of the billy goat and the chicago cubs are the two main ones that i see. and the time signature changes often in this song, but i feel its in 5/4 then switching to 6/4 for that extra beat in the first part. i dont feel anything like a 6/8 time anywhere in this song... |

idk, maybe its just me, but the repetition in this song, and the back and forth arguments make me feel like its more him trying to convince himself that he wants to be with her and not out with his friends. but knowing that this album is basically a story, it would make zero sense with "dry your eyes". but hey, its the feeling i get. |

well, rather than "nah, nah, nah" at the end, i think "gnaw, gnaw, gnaw" would make more sense in context, but would be impossible to tell the difference without the actual lyrics printed. i think this song is about the path laid out for us by society (ie. go get rich and look good) and our complacency in only getting what we get from government. |

well this is definitely one of my favorite songs off swoon. it seems to be a critique of the American media or government judging by the chorus. the sensationalizing of news and triumphs and defeats or injuries. its obviously not a favorable critique, "is it perfect in our little hell?" my suspicion is that its partially about the distortion of things to help remove liberties in recent times. |

| Silversun Pickups – Growing Old Is Getting Old Lyrics | 16 years ago |

im thinking its varicose as well for the same reasons as Dev...though it sounds more like varencose when he says it which, unfortunately is not a word. seems to be about not being afraid of death, that people feel a "guidance" to do something with this life for another one, and that their "devices" make them do this as well. i suppose there could a bit of an anti-religon piece in there. he rejects their "guidance" and "devices" and loses his fear of the cold, and "theres no where to go but here" seems to be a pretty obvious reference to there not being an afterlife. also, i think there is a "we" before each cry and fight and sing and slide. its just not as pronounced as the ones that are already written in. |
