I don't think really this about insomnia. It's about focusing your mind to create a "spin" as you fall asleep in order to "lose" where you were going. I interpret that as an out of body kind of thing. This song is about being able to control the flow of your mind (by not thinking of "all that you despise"). If you can stop you can stop your mind from flowing away from Now, your good. "Along the way to close my eyes I lost where I was going the more it will spin the more that I try to stop my mind flowing away, away to all that I despise along the way to close my eyes" The next part is about expecting the world, so you don't ever get let down. Your single, the expect to lay awake by your sleeping dream girl (not doubting it). The last two lines are only to those who have lost their way to the point that they cannot tell when people care about them. It's the cursed consciousness that is Hell. It's in your head. "You can't be let down if you don't expect the world expect to lay awake and by your sleeping girl if somebody cares then there is no way you can tell cursed consciousness is your private hell" The chorus really is the best though! And this last one's again about your mind straying away from the moment. And I can see how insomnia can be seen as the meaning of this song, but I think that's just the surface. The sun in the morning represents the day, the now. You may think your not prepared for the sun but you can't avoid it. "Tick, tick, tick the clock bludgeons your mind endlessly replaying times that were unkind go away sun I'm not prepared for you today it seems you are, it seems you are, huh!" |

That last line rings true to me after having recently come to the realization that other people are just another version of yourself with their own personal experience to learn lessons they haven't yet. Now instead of judging others or trying to tell them "the way it is", I try to plant seeds of knowledge that may help them through the theme of their problem(s). |

This song is amazing!...like the rest of 311's stuff I guess. After truly falling in love of this song for the third time, I figured out the meaning. The song is about WAKING UP. I always thought "no" when the songs asks: Is there ever a time When the state of sleeping willingly leaves my mind ...and then it suddenly made sense. Enlightenment, self-realization, waking up, whatever you wanna call it. The song starts with "my name is volatile." THAT HUGE! Reincarnation is common sense when you know who your are. When you live at such a fully aware level you think you might get used to it, but you don't, just like the song says. So basically you're here on earth to live life up! Make a mess. Blow off stress. Learn whatever you can while your here. Tune in, so you don't make the same mistake you're whole life. Learn as much as you can about the way things are. One more thing I want to say: The lyrics say "stroke the fire" ?? When I listen I hear "Scope the fire." Which I think means bringing the cosmos down, scoping the vast amount of power from above into your life. Get out in the sun and throw your arms up and scope the fire. That's what I make of it. |

| Yeah the songs about good music that always there to put you in the best of moods. I really love that they said "music" at the end of the song and not throughout. Again the ambiguity allows fans to think about a best friend, or if you don't have one then music will do :) | |

This is a loaded 311 song! Nick starts it out by explaining his sense of how many lives 311 has affected, and not just affected but inspired and caused revelations in fans. Then SA gets DEEP with his verses. I don't know much about the 13th ray of vibrations, but I've googled it before. It's mainly about initiation or the beginning of a spiritual journey to higher consciousness. The chorus can probably be interpreted in many ways (311 likes to do this). What I got from it is that the stupid currents are the life events/circumstances that you have to "swim" through or around. "A bigger task to hold location than to swim upstream somehow" explains how learning from your life circumstances and ascending/evolving/becoming more aware as a person is easier than a life of repeated mistakes and misfortunes. I really love how many levels of understanding are possible when listening to 311. As we are all on our own path "swimming upstream" listening to 311's songs will have different meaning for everyone. But my God I have never heard a band speak so much truth. I encourage fans to pick apart the songs. That's why I'm here. |
