The Band Perry – If I Die Young Lyrics 14 years ago
it's not about suicide. every song on SM is about drugs, sex, jesus, or suicide to you people. get a grip.

it's about a girl whimsically thinking about what stuff would be like if she died. she realizes that she's "lived enough" not to have been robbed of living, so she's okay with it. it's still sooner than she'd like (never had sex, mom not grey yet, etc), but it is what it is.

it's just a young girl romanticizing about death. it's clever, but it's not written very well. that's why it comes off confusing.

honestly, if a song was written of this caliber about any other subject, it would probably go unnoticed. this is about dying young, and a music exec realized it's Vitamin C's 'Graduation Song' for people who knew a dead teen (which is everyone)..so they cashed in on it. starts out strong and decently written, but the "penny for my thoughts" part and everything after is a step back. it's easy to say "yeah, people pay attention more when you're dead...ie, artists that sell more paintings and blah blah blah", but nobody living can relate to that feeling, so it's pretty much moot. "i'll wear my pearls" might as well be "i hope you think that little black dress". images that girls relate to that make them feel special and pretty. effective, but a cheap tactic. song kinda sticks with you a for a few days, so that's why i commented. evs...

i kinda feel like these are really really awesome lyrics being forced to fit the Untitled 3 structure. they deserve their own arrangement.

Taylor Swift – Dear John Lyrics 15 years ago
i'm glad somebody else picked up on that. the song is almost out of place on the album because the arrangement is so similar to 'Gravity'. the draw organ in the background, the blues leads, it was certainly intentional.

Brand New – Brother's Song Lyrics 15 years ago
i think this song was lyrically too direct for brand new to release. jesse's a bit more cryptic than this. i really think 'coca cola' is the same subject matter, only coded.

coca cola isn't as poetic though..which is kinda sad.

Brand New – I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light Lyrics 15 years ago
i think this song and "okay, i believe you; but my tommy gun don't" (and failure by design, a little) are both jesse's way of both hating the state of mind he has to put himself in to write about what he writes about (he's admittedly a pretty depressed dude) and rebelling against the notion that they're a heart-throb band for teenage girls (ala All-American Rejects) and not legitimate (indie) artists.

at this point in time, they were making really great music, and being overshadowed by jesse's magazine cover appearance.

Cory Branan – Miss Ferguson Lyrics 16 years ago
here's the new intro:

i heard you got another boy?
hear he looks a lot like me.
did this one come with some kind of guarantee?

see, i got another girl.
looks like you at 23
and when she sleeps, i trace the places
where your tattoos used to be.

Brand New – Failure by Design Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is, indeed, about the filler element. It's written as an apology to the producer (more than likely the recording engineer on an album like this); the person who would be sitting directly through the communication window in the recording studio..on the one's and twos (the 1, 2, 3, 4 count-off at the beginning of each song). It's this person's job to represent the artist, the label, and streamline the recording process; thus why he's trying to help. This whole song is about the pressure felt when you're in a studio, where time wasted is money spent. Anybody who has ever been in one can relate (i run one). When things fall apart, you panic. Everything is pretty literal. The producer probably is giving him a wakeup call for the few weeks they're on location for recording (the first to call). There's probably a self-locking door on the studio..and every time he goes out to make a phone call, or smoke, or get food..he has to call to get buzzed back in.

The guitar arrangement is really similar to 'Distopian Dream Girl' by Built to Spill; which may be an inside joke. This whole song is just that. Seriously..not everything is multi-faceted. That's what makes this a genius concept.
