Stars – In Our Bedroom After the War Lyrics 15 years ago
I've kind of thought about it a little more...

"When you went away
you were just a kid
and if you lost it all
and you lost it..."

My interpretation: Like going to war for the first time, you have this sort of naivety going into a relationship. You grow up; you lose that innocence, and part of yourself, after a meaningful relationship ends.

Hawksley Workman – Even An Ugly Man Lyrics 15 years ago
Hawksley mentions whiskey a LOT on the Lover/Fighter CD.

I always sort of thought of this song as the narrator losing someone and seeing her with someone else, someone who he sees as inferior to him.

I agree completely with dhlipsky's interpretation.

I never considered this song to be about a literal war.

To me, this song talks about the end of a relationship. Even though it isn't the happiest of times, it's almost easier to be alone. Maybe you're alone, but you're not fighting anymore. This song is one of hope. The relationship is over, so you can pick up the pieces and find happiness on your own again.

Lift your head and look out the window
Stay that way for the rest of the day and watch the time go
Listen the birds sing
Listen the bells ring

This means that life goes on; there's still beauty in the world.

And if the night comes, then the night will come
But at least the war is over.

You may have times when the sadness is overwhelming, but in the long term, you're better off without the constant battle.

I'm not sure what this part means though:

When you went away
You were just a kid

Overall, I think this song gives hope to anyone who is left broken after a relationship. The fighting is done, and you can begin your new life.
