I think it's about searching for an easy way out of life/(s) problems, rather then facing them head all the time . Trying to escape from everything aka. normal city or sub-urban life, human realities, human life that we have created & are stuck living in. So you want/need to get away from it all, by going on vacations and through other means drugs whatever(vague), but realizing you can go away but in all reality the city follows you/ life issues follow you. So instead of delaying things and most likely making things worse, you decide to bite the bullet and face everything head on (change your mind & inhale) . but it feels like a real struggle to finally come to this realization, which is something i think most of us humans can relate too. But I'm for some escape and trying to push past the structured life we live in and I have faith to look through the constrictions we are all placed in. I guess we just gotta keep that fire burning. You'll wanna get away, Walk that country mile. If were all gonna fade away, Let's go out in style. |

I think this song is more about personal image and vulnerability, and quite specifically how some people try to ignore and disregard their thoughts and feelings (aka themselves, their conscience) to the point of self-destruction. For instance the innocent man on a ball and chain, is practically saying how attached this man is to being seen as innocent although this was probably not the case, given the smile on his face for being relieved of such a vain pursuit. The course goes along well with this because Cornell is getting to the point of if you don't fall into the trap of being untruthful to yourself and you embrace being vulnerable then fear will not conquer you. For the daughter of a father that took his life to young and the boy going insane over the voices in his head; it's just another reinforcement to the point of denying thought & feeling to a situation rather then dealing with it directly resulting in being over taken by fear, personal demons, etc. The last verse is basically about losing ones self. It is about a person completely becoming immersed in this "image" that they have created for themselves. And then realizing that his thought's, his feelings, his ideas are no more, he has killed himself. And that's the whole idea/ concept of the song, don't deny thoughts feelings, emotions etc. get them off your chest, find a way to express them (what Cornell directly does with his songs), forget about insecurities {we're all human} stay true to yourself because: if you're free you'll never see the walls if you're head is clear you'll never freefall if you're right you never fear the wrong if you're head is high you never fear at all |
