I think its about a boy who gets so hurt that he is completely numb to feeling anything, mostly love. plus that the woman he was with was older than him, much more experienced, so she broke up with him, and well obviously he thought she was in love with him, so he was heart broken. but halfway through the song, I think he does the same thing to this other girl...because it says "No, it isn't so hard to get close to me There'll be no arguments, we'll always agree And I'll try to be kind when I ask you to leave We'll both take it easy But If you stay to long inside my memory I will trap you in a song tied to a melody And I'll keep you there so that you can't bother me" So, how could he possibly be talking about the same woman in those lines? I think seeing he got hurt himself, he hurts others in the same way he got hurt, maybe not on purpose, but still. Its a really good song. I'm sure a lot of boys could relate to it in some way. quite upsetting. |

"When you love someone but it goes to waste Could it be worse?" Millions of people can relate to that line, I am sure of it. This is the most loveliest song I have ever heard. No joke. Its really meaningful, and I'm quite sure its about someone who suffers but is willing to help this other person who is suffering more, and that's why I think the line "Lights will guide you home And ignite your bones And I will try to fix you" seeing it says "try" and not "I will fix you" I think hes trying to get across the fact that hes in pain himself, but he will try his hardest to fix this other person emotionally and perhaps mentally, if he has the power to do so. but that is just my view of the song. we all have different views of what the song means. |

I think it is about someone who well..obviously loses their religion because they did something bad, or hes in love with someone, and he did something that, the other person will never forgive, which I think kind of fits with the lines "Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream" or maybe he is losing his religion because he is seeing someone failing and what he believes in is just fading away in front of his eyes? Or perhaps he is angry with himself for something he has done. or perhaps a break-up and he is losing his religion because he has lost all their is to believe in. |

I adore this song, simply because its not a song where you have to try and find the meaning. its obvious what it is about, and R.E.M. just gets straight to the point. Everyone can relate to this song. Its beautiful, and I just well...love it :) |
