I saw TBS and they played this. Amazing. =) Also, while I agree not every TBS song is about Brand New and not every Brand New song is about TBS, I do think this is about Brand new (or at least Jesse), as they struck back with all that merch that said "mics are for singing, not swinging." |

Also it looks like it talks about the loneliness that comes with not feeling as if your savior speaks to you, like everyone else feels God, but you don't. |

The song seems to be speaking more about the war of inner vs. outer. Which is more important. Should we focus more on what we as individuals need and crave or is the overall end product for everyone, the entire, world, more important.
Especially this part:
"Cars are little blood cells, we are oxygen
City is airways, suburbs appendages"
Obviously its a comparison of a city to a human body. The city is a hive and everyone has a part to make it successful. In the body, oxygen is carried on blood cells and dispersed to tissue, blah blah blah. Without the oxygen things grow necrotic. I don't know. Its possibly one too many anatomy classes and a habit of reading into things, but I think this is a lot more philosophical than about an ex-girlfriend. |

Ok. I think I should elaborate. pretty much any novel about vampires I have read (and I have read a lot) the vampire is usually lonely, rich, and they get obsessed (for lack of a better term) with human things like cars and experiences (times square). |

I love to think of this as someone wrote it TO the narrator and his reply is the very last verse. Its probably not supposed to be like that at all, but next time you listen to it think of it that way and it seriously feels epically beautiful. Haha. |

| The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics

"We both go down together" does sound quite selfish, but if she's of lower class I don't really think she would have anything to lose by being with a him. He would have everything to lose. Maybe he's trying to convince himself she loves him so he doesn't feel he's the only one sacrificing everything. "We both go down together" could just be his way of justifying the situation to himself. |
