| Coconut Records – West Coast Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The theme of the song West Coast is best expressed as losing a loved one is never easy. Both stanzas one and two suggest this loved one was lost by saying “I talk out loud like your still around.” and “I miss you, I’m going back home to the west coast.” In the chorus, the narrator says how much they would wish for this loved one to come with them to the west coast. The songs lyrical tone feels somewhat disheartening, although the musical tone differs. For instance, stanza four suggests that this person is not yet dead by saying “if you shake her harder she will appear.” I interpreted this to signify that the person is around physically, but not mentally. At that specific point, the lyrical tone seems even more dispiriting. This is because sometimes knowing you could still spend time with a loved one, but instead having to leave them, can be even more hurtful then fatality. For example, each time you take a glimpse at this person, emotions seem to run right back. Whereas after a loved one passes away, there is no option of ever seeing them again, and so it is best to just move on with life. ----------------------------------- i interpretted this song for an english project ha it was super easy to relate to (i live on the west coast) and everyone knows what it feels like losing someone you love! hope you like it :) |

| Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics | 16 years ago |

The lyrics of Mr. Jones is about all the dreams and all the things that make you want to go into doing whatever it is that makes you happy, whether it's being a rock star or being a doctor. Therefore, the theme of this song is go for what makes you happy in life, regardless of how unrealistic it seems. It is about trying to find some kind of meaning in life and something to believe in when “you don’t believe in anything.” The narrator hopes to find this meaning, as well as happiness and a kind of immortality in being a celebrity. In stanza three the song carries on and says “If I knew Picasso I would buy myself a gray guitar and play.” I interpreted this as meaning that the narrator sees himself similar to Picasso since they both express their feelings through a form of creativity. Mainly, the narrator and Mr. Jones just want to seek fame and by the end of the song, the lyrical tone seems hopeful when he sings “Mr. Jones and me, we are going to be big stars.” The musical tone is also very optimistic and promising. |

| Something Corporate – Straw Dog Lyrics | 16 years ago |

The song Straw Dog is all about taking chances and trying new things. It describes a girl who feels as if her life is going nowhere and just wants to take a risk. In stanza one, the lines “she thinks she can fly and she just might” creates a bold lyrical tone. The song continues with the narrator explaining how this girl would prefer to just disappear from the face of the earth, or better said, “to burn out like a torch.” In stanza three, the song reveals its theme, which is take advantage of the opportunities you have in life because you do not know what the future will bring. The song has both a carefree musical and lyrical. The lyrics repeat “hey now, there’s chemicals in the clouds but they won’t get to us anyhow.” The second to last stanza asks what it takes to be a superhero in this world. I interpreted this line to be figurative. It means that not every one is perfect and you can’t always succeed, as superheroes are perceived to do. I also felt it was ironic how the song talked about starting a new life, but by the end of the song a vibe of not succeeding came across. This is because usually when people start fresh, a positive outcome turns out. Last of all, I inferred the straw dog listed various times as something made only to be destroyed. This explains the pessimistic vibe of the last couple of stanzas. |

| Third Eye Blind – Jumper Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The song Jumper discusses a boy who did not fit in and who was angry at the world. The narrator starts stanza one by listing various troubles that make this person an outcast. Such as, “you’re the first to fight, you’re way to loud.” He also sings “you’re the flash of light on a burial shroud.” This means to say that sometimes people are discriminated against because of their differences. Due to this persons suffering, they become depressed. The singer then encourages the boy to put his past away and step off of the subsequent ledge. In the next stanza, the phrase “he is on the table and he’s gone to code” is a metaphor for the medical term code blue. The song then moves on to enunciate the theme which is you should not let what happens in your past affect your future. For example, the narrator says, “We all have to face down our demons” and “put the past away.” The lyrical tone of Jumper is somber. This is because it had a more serious meaning to its lines. For instance, the song talks about suicide and when dealing with this issue there is no time for hesitation. The angry boy ends up dieing after committing suicide. Although, the song’s musical tone is much different. It is upbeat and happy. I found this interesting because one of the most depressing and serious issues is being discussed. The narrator also has a very caring voice as he sings about suicide. | |
