Enya – Aníron Lyrics 15 years ago
It's not Quenya however. It's Sindarin, and yes its grammar and general pronunciation is more strongly based on Welsh and Celtic languages. The Sindar elves inhabited what is now Western Europe. Their last bastion being Britain and Ireland before they all eventually left for Valinor.

In the movie, notice how Arwen's father and her people were leaving? They were leaving for Valinor in Calacirya ('ships of light'), their time in Middle-Earth (Endor, the old World)) being 'done'. Bilbo and Frodo also left on an invitation to Valinor at the end of the trilogy. Valinor is based on the Avalon legends, and the Calacirya are, you guessed it, spaceships. :)

The elves were leaving because as humans grow more numerous they will eventually fade away. Elves do not die naturally (unless of course killed in battle or something), instead they fade away or seek out Valinor. That's the reason why Arwen staying behind was a huge sacrifice on her part. She was nearly 3000 years old, and she could have lived forever but by staying with Aragorn she was condemning herself to eventual death.

Anyway Sindarin is the most human-like of all the Elvish languages. And the farthest removed from the original tongue. It separates words more, for example, like English. Quenya, on the other hand, prefers to agglutinate words, so that an entire sentence in English can become a single word in Quenya, much like modern Finnish or older Latin. In fact Quenya should have sounded more like Spanish/Modern Languages when spoken. Hence Sauron is not 'Saw-rawn' rhyming with paw and lawn but 'Sau-rron' (Elves roll their R's, orcs swallow theirs like modern English) rhyming with Cow and Ton, I think an LOTR actor mispronounces it (Saruman, I think?).

Also I would have loved to hear an Enya rendition of the most famous Quenya poem though, Namarie ('Farewell').

Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
The long years have passed like swift draughts
mi oromardi lissë-miruvóreva
of the sweet mead in lofty halls
Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
wherein the stars tremble
ómaryo airetári-lírinen.
in the voice of her song, holy and queenly.

Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?
Who now shall refill the cup for me?

An sí Tintallë Varda Oiolossëo
For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars,
ve fanyar máryat Elentári ortanë
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds
ar ilyë tier undulávë lumbulë
and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
ar sindanóriello caita mornië
and out of a grey country darkness lies
i falmalinnar imbë met,
on the foaming waves between us,
ar hísië untúpa Calaciryo míri oialë.
and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Sí vanwa ná, Rómello vanwa, Valimar!
Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!
Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar!
Nai elyë hiruva! Namárië!
Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!

The Corrs – Borrowed Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
I love the way the music shifts along different genres. Techno, celtic, orchestral, african chorus/chant, far eastern.

The message is also beautiful. That life itself is precious, not something to be thrown away for a sterile or violent preparation of an afterlife that may not exist. Too many puritan/fundamentalist religons today tell people to spend their entire lives not really living at all, doing penance for a sin they did not commit, simply for a chance to get inside the seemingly very exclusive heaven.

Instead of spending their lives trying to make everyone and themselves happy, they instead waste it away. And more often than not infect other people as well with their misery. Martyrdom, sacrifice, enforced celibacy, executions, wars... A lot of them end up being the angry old people who have realized too late that they have never really been happy even for a single moment in their entire lives.

Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers – Pedal Steel Lyrics 15 years ago
"Maybe if he'd had a son, "

This line threw me off for a bit since I originally thought it was about his father. Then I realized it's about his MATERNAL grandfather. Heh. His mom's dad. Great song.

Ray LaMontagne – Hey Me, Hey Mama Lyrics 15 years ago
Growing up in a country, I'm guessing the song is simply a humorous recounting of being slapped around by his mom for not coming home on time (for dinner probably, probably also didn't do the chores, haha).

The last chorus is especially hilarious, the way the pitch of his voice rises to an almost wailing tone. XD Anticipating the beating.

Same here. It's about accepting defeat sometimes.

It's my favorite Wallflowers song.

Train – Meet Virginia Lyrics 16 years ago
Virginia has the tough, i-don't-care attitude and a shitload of apparent issues and eccentricities, she's definitely NOT your idea of a fairytale princess. Yet, it's her weirdness that actually makes her beautiful, because underneath all that is a kindhearted girl far more interesting than your average hollywood bimbo.

The sad thing is, like all of us, she doesn't see herself as beautiful. She longs to be more 'normal', again like all of us. She wants to be the 'queen', an allusion to the perfect woman portrayed in movies, magazines, etc. which she is not. In the mistaken belief, that she is lacking, abnormal, because she doesn't fit the mould of the conventionally 'beautiful'.

If you've seen the official music video, 'Virginia' is a pretty woman, too frazzled to be beautiful (she can be if she actually bothered)m, working as a waitress. Also notice the depictions of other eccentric people. From the smitten trucker, the germophobic man in the business suit, to the gay chef who defends her from the lecher.

The song is not quite only about her actually. But about all of us. How we all want to be more like the movies, more like how our parents wanted us to be, more perfect no matter how two-dimensional that is. How we always imagine that the 'beautiful people' are happier than us. How that constant yearning to be one of them destroys our self confidence little by little even if we actually have nothing to be ashamed of. We know it already, but it doesn't stop us from deluding ourselves with "if only's". If only I were born more beautiful, if only I were born rich, if only I were born into a 'normal' family, etc. etc.

Marvelous 3 – Katrina Lyrics 16 years ago
Just a song about a stupid macho wannabe homophobe getting the shit beaten out of him. ;) Funnier thing is that Katrina obviously didn't stalk him. He's just too stupid to realize it's what most boys his type do anyway.

Better Than Ezra – Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, he was referring to religion. Religion started out with all good intentions. To show humans the right ways and to steer them off the wrong ones. In the end, it has been twisted into a human tool, to manipulate people into doing things. War, politics, the justification of cruelty to fellow man.

Radiohead – Just Lyrics 16 years ago
In the video when there was a closeup of what the guy was saying with no subtitles. All he actually said was:

"I'll tell you why."

The part where he actually says why is not in the video.

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 16 years ago
Why this obsession with Astrology. LOL. 'Libra' is latin for 'weighing scales'. From there it's quite obvious what the Libra in the title was for.

It IS partly about her mother. "3 Libras" is about all the women in his life. Watch the video.

Hey, your interpretation is also very close to mine. :) It really helps if people actually watched the video to get what this song was about. It wasn't dealing with simple unrequited love from a single person. It's about his entire life.

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 16 years ago
Uh-huh. So?

ROFL. I'm not even a Goth and certainly don't dress like one (I actually listen to Alternative Rock and Industrial usually), but your rant has got to be the most insane, non sequitor reply I've ever come across LOL! The over-the-top usage of 'big' words kinda screams 'overcompensation' too, y'know. It sounds like you have a teeny tiny bit of jealousy over the popular-kid-who-got-all-the girls-in-school to get over with.

*still laughing*

Oh, and by the way, A Perfect Circle is not even a Goth genre, it's Progressive Rock - along the lines of Nine Inch Nails and Emptyself.

Also in the video, the pivotal moment is the boy reaching out for the sailboat.

And for some reason this song makes me think of a puppy gazing at its owner who ignores him. Or yes, a boy desperately seeking for a confirmation of love from his mother. Always wanting to measure up, giving everything. Hence Maynard's official comments on it alluding to baring your throat to Mountain Gorillas, to show vulnerability. And furthermore his comments on hangers-on/parasites/barnacles

In the end, realizing that none of them really cared for him, so why did he even bother?

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 16 years ago
Try watching the video to it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWFv5ZoVET8

One of the most haunting videos ever. It repeatedly shows 3 women.

3 girls who the boy tries to befriend, 3 lovers who he has cold sex with, and 3 older women (the mermaids) one of whom is pregnant and gives birth to him.

'Libra' in this case, refers not to the astrological libra, but to it's original meaning. Libra is a Roman standard of weight measured out by scales - the symbol of justice and also in this song's case - of JUDGEMENT. This is not about romantic love for a single person. This is about the three main forces (or nine, in any 3 different parts of his life - maternal, platonic, and romantic) who shaped Maynard Keenan's life, and all of them judge him, weigh him, none of them actually sees him for what he really is. 3 people who made him feel worthless no matter how hard he tried all his life. I have an idea on who two of them are:

1) His mother, Judith Marie Keenan, who he obviously loathed for raising him in what seems to be a very intolerant religious family. As evidenced by his eponymous song 'Judith' http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/323/ and another one 'Orestes'. The video for '3 Libras' also showed him being inside a womb.

2) His ex-fiance, Jennifer Brena Ferguson. Featured in the song 'Brena' http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/671/ Bad breakup it seems. He is in a new relationship now... and his comment? "For the first time in my life, I have someone who's taking care of me, rather than the other way around.", an obvious dig at his past relationship with his son's mother.

The others were part of his life. One from growing up, one from his romantic relationships, and one from his mother and what I can only speculate as his Aunts or other older women he had been around with.
