| P.S. If you need any more proof, watch the beginning of the music video and tell me that the people passed out drunk all over each other are "having fun." | |

No, Doodlebear's actually absolutely right, I think. The theme is very similar in Poker Face. BUT, where I disagree, is that she's destroying youth- since that's exactly the point of the song, after all. The point is that even something that sounds as simple as "having fun at a party or nightclub" has been twisted by society into a terrible sexual mess. She's not INTRODUCING these concepts to anyone, and that's exactly what's so tragic about it- 11-15 already KNOW about everything in this song, and on the older end of that spectrum they're even at risk of having this happen to them at one of their own parties. (I'm rather young, trust me on that one.) |

(Connection dropped...) Especially the line "And baby when it's love if it's not rough it isn't fun" is meant to make the listener step back, a "Did she just say that?" moment. It makes you question how much belief she really has in her words. The "Russian Roulette" line highlights the fact that the gambling she's taking part in isn't just a win-win situation- it's dangerous to her and everyone else, and the line between money and life is being blurred intentionally. The chorus is more "sung" than any other part of the song- the internal feelings, a fear about the poker face she's using. And near the end of the song, starting with "I won't tell you that I love you/Kiss or hug you, cause I'm bluffing" her poker face begins to fall- her voice somewhat leaves the same monotone melody and the lyrics shift closer to the truth. This also point out that the sexual images in our soceity are hurting everyone, not just girls- she's breaking everyone else's heart while she damages her own. TL:DR- Everything but the chorus is a "poker face," society is oversexualized and in turn destroying men and women alike. |

Theory- This song, taken just from the lyrics, does sound like it's a Pussycat Dolls style "sexy" song. But Lady Gaga's deeper than that, I think. My theory- this song is about being lost in an over-sexualized society. The fact that it's a "poker face" means that the true meaning isn't shown on the cover- and if you listen, large parts of the song are sung in almost complete monotone. These parts are the "poker face" in question: "I wanna roll with him, a hard pair we will be A little gambling is fun when you're with me Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun And baby when it's love if it's not rough it isn't fun (right?)" The true meaning is the scared loss of control that comes with a society in which, to get ahead, women are being forced to exploit themselves and act sexually. Even the song's radio success backs this up- it's been marketed as a sexual song, her live performance on Idol and the video were both very sexualized. |
