The Standells – Dirty Water Lyrics 15 years ago
Well, as the lyrics say, it's about the Boston Strangler. For those who don't know, he would sneak into the dorms at a nursing school after curfew ("wishin' and a-hopin' that just once those doors weren't locked") and strangle girls who were alone in their rooms ("frustrated women, have to be in by twelve o'clock"). Anyway, he confesses at the end: "Have you heard about the strangler, I'm the man, I'm the man!"

BUT...

The true meaning for Bostonians is an anthem of pride for a city that gets no respect. You have not really heard this song until you've been in a bar full of Red Sox fans lifting their beers and screaming at the top of their lungs: "I LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER....OOH, BOSTON YOU'RE MY HOME!!!" And that, my friends, is one of the most glorious moments in life.

Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is A Place On Earth Lyrics 15 years ago
The world's alive
With the sounds of kids on the street outside...

And we're spinning with the stars above,
And you lift me up in the web of love.

What great images. I can just see my 80's self in my almost-dark bedroom on a summer night, windows open, waiting for my boyfriend to get home. This kind of stuff you can only feel when you're young.

Donna Summer – MacArthur Park Lyrics 15 years ago
Yikes, can we get these lyrics deleted and the right ones put up?

Having said that, I actually like Donna's version better than Richard Harris's. Nothing personal Rich, but Donna does have a better voice and her version cuts out most of the stuff that makes the original so boring. Plus you can dance to her version! Sue me, but I still like disco, so I'm voting for Donna.

Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman Lyrics 15 years ago
I think you are right on track delial. At least that's how I always interpreted the words.

I think what I like is the spareness of the arrangement, how it paints a picture of a guy against a background of big, open country and wide sky, squinting into the sun as he checks the wires. The whole song is kind of poignant, giving the impression of his loneliness as he works long hours alone, while thinking of the woman he loves. Even after hearing it a million times, it still always touches me.
