I don't know how many people know the history of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 but it almost sounds like the song could refer to it. What happened then was almost all the workers collectively stopped working for a couple weeks in response to how three large companies were treating there workers at the time, this essentially shut down the city for a few days. The Local and Federal Government as well as the wealthy industrialists at the time were afraid of what a large movement like that would bring, first the wealthy in society created their own police force since the actual police officers were to sympathetic to the poor workers. This "vigilante" police force were given a bunch of blunt weapons to beat the strikers and try to break up the strikers. After that still didn't break the poor's spirits the RCMP was sent in and eventually the military until one Saturday named Bloody Saturday were a riot ensued and shots were fired into the crowd two people were killed and i think 1000's injured. Why i think this song could relate to it is because most of the poor workers on strike were from the north end which would explain the North end hordes, however from my understanding though even today Winnipeg is still pretty socially stratified with the poor usually immigrant working class in the north, and the wealthy business owners in the south. So i'm sure it doesn't refer to maybe this particular incident, because i'm sure history has repeated it's self as states and corporations all ways seem to find a way or at least try to break the spirit of the poor who revolt against their terrible conditions. Which explains the mission accomplished line because when the strike was over the workers had gained nothing but the business and government side had accomplished silencing a leftist movement the large crowds that had gathered over the past month petered out to return to their employers the next day. |

I don't believe they are going soft on religion with this song. In fact i think the complete opposite. What i believe they're trying to get at is that lately even atheism has become as militant as most main stream religions. And with it becoming so militant it would not take much for it to be manipulated and exploited like every other religion has been in the past. Therefore it would be used as a tool for hatred, when really secularism should be focusing of making this world a better place to live in while were still here. |
