| Correction: each instance of "isolation" is actually "isolations". And do you think "Coldest comfort" could be "Cold discomfort"? | |

I think you're digging a little too deep in the line about guitar strings buzzing. Most guitars have at least a little fret buzz, but even beyond that, the entire concept of a guitar is just metal strings vibrating, which in this case means almost the same thing as buzzing. If you look at the rest of the lyrics, they're a bit scattered. Each line describes a pretty ordinary moment, but you can tell they mean a lot to him (or whoever the narrator is). In these lines he talks about listening to this person play guitar, feeling a bit mesmerized (as he mentions in the next line) and just notices the beauty in the way the strings are creating sounds by vibrating and buzzing. Kind of like zoning out and getting lost in the beauty of the moment, which a lot of the other lines suggest as well. |

| Can you be more specific? I was actually kind of confused by what Win was trying to say with that last bit. 'Something wild'? | |
| Spoon – Written in Reverse Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I also read elsewhere that it's literally written in reverse, but it actually makes less sense to me that way. | |

I hardly comment on songs here but thought this discussion was interesting. Just wanted to remind people that it doesn't have to narrow down to one meaning - it's cool that everyone has their own idea of how literal this song is, and that's probably how Britt intended it. I'm just starting to get into Gimme Fiction and this is a standout on the first few listens. My initial impression is that it's more metaphorical than literal. Like someone pointed out, the story doesn't make complete literal sense, but it doesn't have to, it's more about the feeling it provokes. He talks about wanting to land the part of this guy who makes love to the duke and swordfights the queen and steals the show, and it feels to me like a metaphor for wanting to be that guy in life. Trying to be the best person you can, always working toward that ideal, just like landing that lead role in the play. But I'm not so sure about the second verse.. need to give it more time before trying to analyze too much. |

| Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Two thoughts: 1) Everyone seems to think it's "Wait, I watched you throw out your bouquet" but the first time I heard it, I thought it was "Wait, why'd you throw out your bouquet?" The way he sings it, you can't really tell which is the correct way, but I wanted to point out the possibility. 2) Everyone is thinking it's "at the bottom you'll find all our friends" but I'm quite sure it's "at the bottom you'll find all my friends". It fits better, sounds more like what he's saying and makes more sense. |

further correction: "Oft my wandering heart is, lord, On some by-path far from thee" added commas clarify the meaning and make the line fit into the entire piece a lot better. |

| Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| After having read about this a little more, it might be worth noting that the moral of this "Dog in the Manger" fable is, in itself, a bit of a vice (begrudging others what you cannot enjoy yourself). | |
| Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| the latter two lines, of course, are the same as in the "vices" opening recording. | |

This is what I've got for the ending. "Oft-times cloudy is the way, But today then beckons me Oft my wandering heart is lord On some by-path far from thee Father, when my footsteps stray Guide me back into thy way Oh, let it be, let me be On life's highway, God's with thee." [or 'me'] |

You know, it also kind of sounded to me like it could be "the dog in the manger" - so I googled that aaaaand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dog_in_the_Manger Wonder if it's an allusion to this? |

meatistic seems the closest. I'm hearing: Well, God created The tall kid in the manger Where is my shrink and my mind's eraser? Fuck, I love Jesse's voice in this song. Listen to how he sings "eraser".. he sounds perfectly insane. |

Thanks guys, I updated the lyrics with some of your changes. That middle section is really hard to figure out.. hoping there's a lyric booklet in the CD case but I somehow doubt there will be. Also - here's what I've got for the opening piece, any ideas? Far away from any road Rose my heart in solitude Where your parcel boy can't see [?] On life's highway, God with thee Knowing when all else doth fail Thy compassion shall be [??] [??] Let me be On life's highway, God with thee |

| 101% positive it's "I'm on my way out" | |
| Taking Back Sunday – Carpathia Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Awesome song, possibly the best on New Again. Definitely a song about emotional pain that I think everyone can relate to. The chorus is completely self explanatory: he's going through a rough patch in his life, maybe a breakup, divorce, or death or loss of someone close to him, and he's just waiting for it to pass, and looking forward to years down the road when it's all a distant memory and he can look back on it and say "man, that was ages ago...". I don't know if Adam's referring to anything specifically in the verses, but it sounds like a relationship or marriage that's collapsing ('sinking'). I also really like the reference to Carpathia the boat, pointed out by CracktheBottle. "This sinking feeling"... the Titanic sinking... Carpathia rescuing the survivors. Haha, I know you guys aren't idiots but it's a really cool metaphor that some people might not catch. |

| Brand New – Bought a Bride Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i thought it was 'alley' until i thought i heard him say 'aisle' and realized it made a lot more sense in the context of the song. same thing happened for 'violins' vs. 'violence'. also, this should be at least pretty close to the finished version of the song, which jesse says "should" be on the new record. | |

great job on the lyrics, whoever submitted these. i made a few corrections and i think it's almost perfect now, see below. and if anyone knows how to update the lyrics up above to incorporate my changes, please do. ---- Trees will make a forest Trees will make a bow These are all the harder Words you have to know If everyone's a structure Where their own savior sits Then I'm a little red house But no one's living in it Cars are little blood cells We are oxygen City is the airway Suburbs appendages She was feeling lonely She left the hive Rented out a family She bought a bride Bought a bride Bought a bride Bought a bride Little cities names labeled along the map They tied her up and laid her on the train tracks Where are all the seedlings We grew for violence Down in Jersey lumber Stealing prosthetic limbs Should've been a soldier I should've fought and died There's no revolution So I bought a bride Bought a bride Bought a bride Bought a bride Coming down the aisle while the horns play Taps They tied her up and laid her on the train tracks Somehow I always knew when everything was unsaid Go and buy a hammer, never sing again |
