Modest Mouse – The World at Large Lyrics 16 years ago
This song always makes me think of Jack Kerouac.

If you don't know who Kerouac is, look him up; he was amazing. He wrote "On the Road." Read it.

Modest Mouse – Autumn Beds Lyrics 16 years ago
It makes me think about how some religious and closed-minded people tend to judge others. I don't think Isaac is referring to a literal "DA" or court/jury, etc. IMO, from Isaac's point of view, he's being judged no matter what he does. Most religions always have a set of rules that, in their opinion, all humanity is supposed to follow in order to be redeemed and included in the "Kingdom."

"They pulled up the welcome mat so many times they hurt their back..." -Sometimes certain religions or belief systems form an elitist-type of group and look at everyone else as outsiders who don't have the "answers in life," because they think they do. The welcome mat is there to only welcome anyone who agrees with them or who can benefit their group in some way. They don't like anyone who questions or opposes their views, because they like to feel secure within their group. Therefore, they pull up the welcome mat to those who think outside the box, and hurt themselves all along because they are the ones who are truly missing out in life.

"They said guilty so many times, all I heard was the buzzing lights..." -A lot of people who have made mistakes have been judged and talked about so much, they become numb or apathetic.

"Sure as lead sinks just the same" - This makes me think of the references to death that Isaac often uses. We're all going to die, and most religions believe in an afterlife because humans have a desire to believe they're more than just animals.

"Just more laundry they need to hang..." There's always people who twist others people's words and actions justify their warped opinions and beliefs. They need to judge others so that they can feel comforted that they're the "good" people.

AUTUMN BEDS sounds like it belonged on "Good News" for sure. The song "World at Large" says: "I like the Autumn, but this place is getting old." That line always makes me think of Jack Kerouac, the brilliant author and poet. He lived many years as a drifter, always searching for some kind of meaning to life. He always became restless in Autumn. As he got older, he hated fame, became bitter and reclusive. He drank himself to death, and died at the beginning of Autumn.

In the first verse, the "case" goes to the "DA" in October - just when everything is bright and lovely in most parts of the country. By November, it's usually dead and brown. Autumn is the season when the leaves turn the brightest and most beautiful, just before they die. Autumn is harvest time.

The second verse mentions August, when summer is winding down, and Autumn's onset isn't far away. I've heard life compared to the seasons. Autumn is when you should be enjoying the fruits of your labor. You should be reaping what you sow and enjoying the grand finale and beauty in everything.

"We won't be sleeping in our Autumn Beds..." - The beauty has somehow been taken away from the "golden years." There'll be no rest, peace, or comfort when it should be the time to be resting, peaceful, and comfortable. It could be about someone's life coming to a close, but not in the way they expected because it's not when they're old, or they've made too many mistakes, etc. That, or other people won't leave the past alone, stop judging, and let things go. The beauty in death (or being able to let an old mistake die) has been taken away.

A Fine Frenzy – The Minnow and the Trout Lyrics 16 years ago
I love how she uses evolution in this song. We all came from the same origin, and there's beauty in that, so let's get along and whatnot. It's so lovely. I think she's establishing herself well. I hope she stays true to her ability and continues to touch on intelligent subjects such as this song's. Can't wait 'til the next album is released.

Dave Matthews Band – Time Bomb Lyrics 16 years ago
Dave was raised a Quaker, but is Agnostic. Here's an excerpt from a 2001 Boston Globe interview:

""'It would be safe to say that I'm agnostic,' Matthews says. 'However, I do feel as though we owe a faith to the world and to ourselves. We owe a grace and gratitude to things that have brought us here. But I think it's very ignorant to say, `Well, for everything, God has a plan.' That's like an excuse. ... Maybe the real faithful act is to commit to something, to take action, as opposed to saying, `Well, everything is in the hand of God.'"

My take on this song may be a little different from what Dave intended, but I instantly related to it. I was raised in a Christian Fundamentalist-type church, which fervently believes in a literal interpretation of the Old Testament and New Testament. I've not gone to church for about 5 years, and in that time, my views have changed completely. (I always had nagging doubts about what I was taught as a child anyway.) I am now somewhere between Agnostic and Atheist. I have learned so much since escaping that suppressive state of mind, and the more I learn, the more I evolve as a person.

While I don't regret changing my views, there are times I wish I could revert to the Christian state of mind, because sometimes it made life easier to be able to say "God has a reason for everything and Jesus is taking care of me." As they say, "Ignorance is Bliss." It's kind of like wishing to be a child and believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. I grew up, though, and have learned to embrace the beauty in the not knowing. You can never go back home.

Also, refer to the song "Dive In" on this album. I love the part that says:
"though we would like to believe we are
we are not in control
though we would love to believe"

Eh-Hee, What You Are, Proudest Monkey, One Sweet World come to mind regarding the subjects of religion and evolution.

People love clinging onto the idea that they have all the answers. They want to believe that they can be forgiven for the crap they can't forgive themselves for doing (sin) or "wash away" all the things they regret. People want to believe they'll go somewhere better when they die. That's a basic emotional need, and God fills it for some people. I understand this. I know why people do it. Maybe Dave sometimes wishes life could be that easy. Just my thoughts, but I'm probably a fucking nut job. :p

Blue October – Dirt Room Lyrics 16 years ago
When asked about "Dirt Room" ....Lead singer, Justin
Furstenfeld explains when asked about the lyrics of the song "it's too dark and
personal, I don't think you can print that", but adds, "It's about fighting
back.....to put an END to those who think they can hurt the ones you love."

Dave Matthews Band – Funny the Way It Is Lyrics 16 years ago
Loved DMB since forever...was frustrated that he did a song with the craptastic Kenny Chesney (just a personal opinion...) This song has redeemed him in my eyes, lol.

I love, love, love this song. It's a beautiful poem. The meaning is easy:

One thing I've learned about "fairness" in life - the point is there is no point. It's your job to find the beauty in it. Human struggle is part of being alive. People can be on different and opposite spectrums at any given moment. What you do with yourself - your actions and attitiude - can impact others in so many ways. The best we can do is to do the best we can.

Ugly Casanova – Parasites Lyrics 16 years ago
"Parasites" make me think of my ignorant drama-filled extended family. My Grandpa passed away in 2003, but had been on his "death bed," (in the words of some of his daughters and grandchildren) since like 1990...and until a year before he died, he pastored a church and worked a full time job. In other words, it's alot like those people who watch the news and make a huge deal out of sick, sad stories because they have a sick, sad fascination. It's exciting to them, because their lives suck. When someone dies, they get to cry and be dramatic.

Once I let go of all the religious crap I was raised on, I felt so liberated, and still do. Knowing that this is the one chance I have at life makes me appreciate and value who I am and what I have. The afterlife was created by people to comfort themselves because no one wants to die. But really, when you're dead, you have no idea you're dead, so why freak out and pretend some fairy tale that isn't real?

Can I get an amen, yo. ;)
