For fuck's sake. It makes me sick how people sit around thinking they can contribute something to the world when they have no prior insight into the things involved. (sorry,I'm a bit of a raging ranter. Anyways...) There is Theistic Satanism, meaning the literal belief & worship of Satan as a diety. Then there is LaVeyan Satanism, which seems to be the more popular variant & is also the branch of Satanism that made Manson a reverend in the church of Satan. LaVeyan Satanism is more of a belief system, & do not actually worship Satan at all. They recognize Satan as man made being, & use the symbology of what Satan represents as a basis for their belief system. ...Just thought I had to clarify that... Look it up sometime. |

This song is about the end of life through suicide. The way the song describes it, it almost makes the act of suicide ritualistic and beautiful. "Die in the sunset" is symbolic of the end of things, with the sunset symbolizing that end. "Play in the darkness" is putting the act itself in the view that suicide is a game one delves in. The lines "a short while till the blood runs red and the sun won't shine" refers to the immenent coming act of suicide. The title itself, and repeated lyric, "Tranquilize", is hinting at the numbing of the senses, and in this song, that happens to be through commiting Suicide. |

The song is clearly about self-destruction, inadequecy in life, failure at love relations, and a need to fulfill that with promiscious sex and suicide. Clearly He (wiL Francis/William Control) finds beauty in his misachievements, and has basically given up on life itself. His sole purpose in living now is to delve in self-destructive activities to make up for his own self loathing and hatred. And that's why I listen to this song! ^^ |

In my opinion the first few lines to this song are suggestive of Suicide. "It doesn't matter if we all die" is a general statement about hopelessness in life. "Ambition in the back of a black car" Black symbolizing death, the car could be a hearse, and ambition is in the back of it because of those suicidal feelings of never being able to amount to anything. "In a high building there is so much to do" now emphasis is being put on the size of the building, with depressing lyrics preceding this. Likely he (Smith) is hinting at jumping to one's own death. And the "Going home time, the story on the radio" would be suggestive of how the News would broadcast the suicide incident, and how even though the individual took his life, all he is to the rest of the world is just another story to sell. One Hundred Years definately sets the tone and theme of Pornography, one of The Cure's Darkest and brooding albums that deals with the decay of life, the fall into madness, and general hopelessness in living. Well, that's how i see it anways. |
