I am a little unsettled that among all of the thoughtful, philosophical comments by obviously intelligent people no one addresses what's really important about this song: that it is an obvious critique of the United States' religiously motivated involvement in Israel... |

What? At no point in Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys did anyone rob a bank, they did however steal a statue of St. Agatha from their Catholic school. I don't think this song has anything to do with that though. To me, this song represents the loss of innocence some people are humbled by as they transition from kids to adults - whether it's sex, drugs, or both that corrupt you it's a realization that can be soul crushing if you're not psychologically prepared for it. |

To me, this song is about a painful, complex relationship that exists between two people who are mentally unstable. As the other person begins to show signs of being "lost" (identity crisis, lapse of sanity) the narrator becomes frustrated and controlling, saying whichever way you go ("if you could fall I will fill your mouth with a sour taste, and if you rise I will beat you there on a higher plane") you're fucked without me. The meaning is twofold: on one hand, he's trying to convince this person that they can't do it on their own and that they need him to succeed... and on the other, he's saying he only wants them to succeed insofar as they stay with him. It even sounds eerie. Pretty fucked up when you think about it. |
