I love this song and I didn't think it was about anything negative about this old man. Over time we lose things around us, people places and things and this song is insightful about that very thing. What isn't really apparent to me is when Neil is singing from the perspective of the young man and/or the old man (most things we do have been repeated many times over by older people), that is the genius of this song and a definite of kudo to the intelligence of crafting of it . Switching the initial intention between 1st and 2nd person as well as some lyric interpretations make this one of my favorite songs of all time... |

@[AstroFiend:8972] ~ I agree its a masterpiece and like your interpretation of the 2nd half of the story... I attribute it a bit to Damien Rice's song chorus "Cannonball a bit where the person seems to find themselves in a shade of Jade regardless of how much they care about someone they love. "you have a hand that strikes, when just a touch of love is all the problem needed", feels to me like reasons why the person is this way whether it was a childhood upbringing or it was used in retrospect of a confrontational incident of a loved one... The sun metaphor I feel is providing hope to get through the possible damage that was caused from that incident by moving forward through it. Although I like the album version that has the Dolphin story intro, I like the acoustic live version better that seems to be more about the human side of the story that you are describing above... |

This is my favorite song from Three Doors Down. I agree with most of the sentiment that has been described above, but also read some Hendrix in the lyrics.
" Kiss me while Im still alive Kill me while I kiss the sky" - from Purple Haze "Scuze me while I Kiss the Sky"... I see a connection between the life and death of Hendrix and his lifestyle that is simular to this songs lyrics and that chorus...
It may be a stretch but its a connection from my point of view... |

I think this song is more about the experience of feeling alive when you have chosen to be exposed from your personal safety net, whatever that might be to you.
There is a freedom of taking risks, if only for the moment, and your body responds to that of your heart, metaphorically and literally. |
