I always thought the lyric was, "which do you do more often, smile or nod?" anyways i think the song is just using the setting as a metaphor for her feeling "looking through a window, at another window" represents the urban setting of apartments, but also represents how she feels detached. "i see toenails changing color, like the leaves of fall" shows how in the city there aren't leaves so toenails must show it, but also it shows time passing and her still dwelling on the break-up. the line (to my interpretation) "which do you do more often, smile or nod?" shows how she thinks about this man in just curiosity because she misses him so much. The smile or nod shows when he is walking and acknowledges a person, what he does. All around a great song, no matter what its meaning. It sounds beautiful and the lyrics being so cryptic creates such interest! |

okay so i read the first several comments and i dont feel like reading more but the "painting elephants" thing is calling her a tease because if you think a general shape of an elephants face looks like a penis (two ears=balls and trunk=shaft) and the main jist of this song is talking about being "just friends" aka where the guy is totally falling for a girl and the girl just finds him as a friend this is shown through lines like: "i take it i'm your crutch the pillow in your pillowcase is easier to touch" where she just uses him as a shoulder "best guy friend" this pillow is her emotions, and her pillowcase is her body he wants all of her, to be her boyfriend but she only gives him the emotions she would give to a friend |
