Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's interesting to see other meanings in this song :

The first interpretation has been pointed out a number of times in this thread - the music industry is collapsing into a stagnent, commercialised heap. It's no secret that SW finds the industry frustrating.

The second way I see to interpret the song follows on with the serial killer theme of the album:

"Hear the sound of music drifting in the aisles
Elevator prozac stretching on for miles"
The killer has been caught and is in an institution or asylum. The music in the aisles is "Musak" (commonly known as elevator music). The asylum is grey and bland, the corridors streching for miles. Prozac - an antidepressent - could figure heavily in the killer's diet now.

"The music of the future will not entertain
It's only meant to repress and neutralise your brain"
Perhaps the killer had a passion for music which he dreads losing now that he's forced to listen to the Musak in the aisles of the asylum. This musak is literally chosen to keep everybody passive and calm - neutralising their brains.

"Soul gets squeezed out
Edges get blunt"
He feels his soul is getting squeezed out by the medication and treatment he receives. He's losing his killer's soul. Edges get blunt, since all objects must be harmless so nobody can inflict damage to themselves or others in the asylum.

"Demographic
Gives what you want"
I find this a little hard to fit into the theme - but the killer could be saying that he's been targetted because he doesn't fit the "normal" demographic of the world. He doesn't fit into society so they make him what they want (brain wash in an institution).

"One of the wonders of the world is going down
It's going down I know
It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares
No-one cares enough"
His killer instincts, his love for life (and moreso for death), is all being taken away. He feels he is part of the wonder of the world, but that's being taken away. Nobody cares for his loss because society doesn't approve of the way he was.

"Now the sound of music comes in silver pills
Engineered to suit you, building cheaper thrills"
More pills - asylum - engineered to drain his passion.

"The music of rebellion makes you wanna rage
But it's made by millionaires who are nearly twice your age"
His music of rebellion definitely made him want to rage, and kill. But it's not made by killers like him, it's made by people who probably never understand how significant it could be to some people - like the killer. People who write rap songs about murder and rock songs about hell, have never seen or committed a murder and probably won't even go to hell.

Well I think it's interesting to find other meanings to the lyrics. I'm sure most won't agree. Personally I think the obvious meaning of the lyrics are undisputable - and it's clear that the music industry is the butt of a bit of a rant in this song.
