Regardless of what the song was originally written about, when I hear this song I think of a woman in the PTSD of being raped, especially the, "You better shut your mouth / And hold your breath" as describing the actual event, as though that was what she had been told to do and she's reliving it.
Whatever it's actually about, it's comforting to me in a very sad way.

This song, I think, encompasses every aspect of life--which is a real feat for a 3 1/2 minute song. Especially the part from "this is how it works: you're young until you're not" to "you'll just do it all again." I feel like that portion of the song takes all the generic advice she's gotten about life--like "you're young until you're not" and "you laugh until you cry"--and kind of refutes it, saying, "No, actually, that's not really how life works. It's actually like this."
It's really very beautiful. |

Some of these comments talk about the relationship having a "bad side," but I don't think there's really a bad side at all. There sometimes simply comes a time when a person has to figure out where she stands on her own and can't be pulling along anyone beside her while she does that. In this song, Missy is singing about knowing how much she loves the person, but what she needs at that moment is to be free. |

Philosophically I'm sure this song has something to do with turning dreams into reality or looking at things a new way, but whenever I listen to it, I have to think it's sort of about dancing, especially because of the line, "If we turn, turn, turn, we might learn." Because when you dance with a partner, you have to learn how to work together, so I always like to think the song was inspired by that. |
